Getting closer....

June 12th, 2007 at 09:55 pm

The HVAC tech came today and cleaned the furnace, and replaced a circuit breaker. It was $311.14. More than I expected, but I was charged for a new filter (~$10)and for the trip to Ace Hardware to buy the circuit breaker ($65) and the circuit breaker itself (~$121). I was eager to get it done and out of the way, so when he was quoting costs, I said "Whatever it takes." Don't ever say, "Whatever it takes."

But I had the money, and it is nice to have it done. The appraiser came while he was there, so that is done, too. Now I just have to get the bird's nest out of the garage. And pack, pack, pack.

Tonight I'm going to a good-bye party (potluck) my co-workers are throwing. I warned them that I am using up stuff in my fridge, so I am taking a half-gallon of frozen yogurt and some toppings.

My VP sent out a message to all the staff today announcing my retirement -- a very nice message that made me feel appreciated. Afterwards several people called to wish me well. I hope I can get through this process without a big emotional meltdown. It would be easier if I were dying to leave, but I'm not. There are many things and people I'm going to miss. Thank goodness I will still have you guys!

Fern, you asked where I'm moving from. I'm in central Indiana, land of corn and unpredictable weather. I'm looking forward to the mountains of North Carolina, but I will always be a Hoosier in my heart.

Well, I live near the mountains of North Carolina. I am 20 miles south of Murphy, N.C. Welcome to the mountains.

Congratulations. It is great that you have accomplished so much. You've done well. I wish you luck. Do you know people where you are moving?

Julie, I'm not sure where Murphy is. I'll be near Asheville. Beautiful country!

Aleta, the main reason I am moving is to be close to my sister in Flat Rock, and to share a house with my cousin. My cousin is slightly disabled; having a "housemate" will help her, and financially it will help me.

HouseHopeful -- I have put in 23 years!

scfr -- yes, it IS nice!

Thank you all for your good wishes.

Wow, this is a big move for you, from the heartland to the coast.

Oh, and "ouch," yes, that's an exceedingly dangerous phrase every homeowner should avoid: "Whatever it takes."

Yes, i would be getting a bit sentimental at this point too. I have lots of good things about Asheville. Sounds like you've put a lot of thought into this move and are doing everything that needs to be done.

Good luck with the packing. The good thing is, no matter where you move, you'll never be without us guys.

Congratulations on selling your house so quickly!

My daughter sold her's in one week but I didn't want to tell you before...didn't want to jink you!

Just curious...I'm about your age (I think), also single...what are you going to do for health insurance?

Thanks and good luck with the packing.

    Sunshine Suz,

I do get to retire with insurance benefits, but the premiums are much higher -- about $380 a month. I will pay off the rest of the year in one lump sum, and take the time to research other options. I am interested in high-deductible, catastrophic insurance, since I am quite healthy. I would then open a medical savings account as well. As I say, I have the rest of the year to figure it out.

    Thank you.
I am enrolled in a High-deductible health insurance at work now. I also have a Health Savings account, which I hope to continue adding to while I am working and then have it for a cushion when I quit. I will not have insurance benefits. I did find an online insurance site that had a good variety of companys....United Health Care being one, which is who my insurance is with now. it is ehealthinsurance.com Maybe you can blog about what you find out...in January...in the Carolina's. Happy Retirement!
