Home again

August 1st, 2011 at 09:34 pm

I'm back from my conference. It was awesome. And my extra day with my cousins was fabulous, although I spent a little more than I wanted to. But then, they picked up a lot of the cost, too.

I'm getting back $1128, if my expense report is approved. What I spent above that was ...

$84 for food on Saturday/Sunday
$14 for entertainment (boat ride to see the bats)
$50 for ground transportation (didn't get a receipt -- long story)
$58 for gifts (good finds for Christmas)
$18 for a souvenir necklace for myself
$217 for the extra night in the hotel
$5 tip for the hotel maid

Whew!

What I resisted:

I didn't buy a book, even though my Nook lost its juice.

I didn't spend $$$ to get an earlier flight when I was dropped off at the airport early.

I didn't buy food/water to keep in my room.

I didn't order a movie in my room.

It could have been worse, financially.

Now I'm ready to try my $300 experiment again. It's August 1, and I have spent....

$15 for a Groupon to ride a Tall Ship at Navy Pier. Let me explain. I really, really wanted to do this last year and didn't get the chance. They only come once a year and now's the time. And my birthday is coming up, so this is my present to myself. I'm riding the Tall Ship!

I've only gone to a few work related conferences in my day, but i did enjoy staying in very nice hotels. I went to San Antonio twice (loved it), Philly, NYC and Boston. It was fun to travel by myself and treat myself to a real nice dinner in a posh hotel. I felt like Audrey Hepburn, he he.

The Tall Ships sound like so much fun! Tell us about the bats!

Austin is home to a very large congregation of bats who live under the Congress Street Bridge. Every evening they all come out and fly away to feed. They stick together in a formation, kind of like geese do, but there are thousands of them, so it's like this big black looping rainbow. Every evening people gather on the bridge and in boats under the bridge to watch. It's quite the celebration!

PS, funny you should say that. Audrey Hepburn was my idol!

Enjoy that tall ship...I've seen video of them on the news in the past and they are majestic!

Amazing--We had some bat issues when we moved in our house, and bats sort of creep me out, but they sound fascinating.
