Bummer!

July 3rd, 2013 at 01:33 pm

I knew the second half of the tax bill was coming this summer, but I was hoping I had another month! (Since this is my first year in this home, I didn't know the cycle).

Now I have to pay $1462 by August 1. Well, there is no slush fund any more so I will have to take it out of the credit union. After all my monkeying around to avoid it! I'll make a trip there, perhaps on Friday or Monday.

My trip to Florida is imminent, too. I was hoping to make it low-cost, but with my son struggling as he is, I can't be a financial burden on him. I'll be buying groceries, diapers, dog food etc. Maybe we can find some really good deals. The only thing I want to do there besides play with my granddaughter, is make a side trip to visit my uncle in his retirement home. So I guess I'll be buying gas, too! I'm hoping to get the whole family to go; my uncle will love seeing the baby again, who is named after his late wife.

Tonight I'm going to a family get-together which will be capped by walking to the beach to see the fireworks. However, it's raining right now, so I don't know how that will go. Tomorrow we'll be having a cookout and will go see the parade. Again, weather permitting. My contribution to the holiday will be making potato salad and bringing pop. I'm tempted to just go to GFS for the potato salad, as I don't even have the ingredients yet!

I wish I felt better. This cold is dragging on.

I just renewed my parking pass for the university where I used to work. It's one of my retiree privileges -- a free parking pass. I don't use it very often, but it's nice to have when I want to visit old friends. Without it, I would be parking in the boonies -- or paying top dollar.

Ugh, sorry about all of the above. The cold is not helping, I know; I had a ton of minor illnesses the first half of this year, and I remember they made every other little annoyance seem that much more unbearable.

It is annoying, isn't it, to struggle with minor stuff. I think I'm still feeling not quite myself after a very minor ankle sprain. I wonder if you can take some diaper coupons and other $ savers with you to Florida? How nice to see your uncle.

What a great perk from the university!

Hoping you're feeling better; what suggestions does pharmacist offer to combat symptoms? When feeling poorly combined with having to shop for ingredients and th work segments involved [peel & boil potatoes, boil & peel eggs, chop scallions etc] I'd op to buy potato salad & just add a bit of spices.

Wonderful to visit son, new grand baby and uncle. I'm surprised DS is struggling financially and wonder if he'd find some fresh ideas on SA that would be helpful.

DS is quite good at frugality; however, the job he was promised in Florida has not yet materialized -- certification issues -- I think it will eventually be all right, but this is not a good time for them. He is an exceptionally well-trained fine-dining server, so he is exploring that option temporarily.

I, too, live in metro Chicago, Cook County, have ALL my life. This treaurer, Maria Pappas, seems to be MUCH better organized. The tax bill was on time. Usually it has been a month/more late. We'll have to see how it goes in future years.

Previous late bills have been blamed on assorted taxing bodies not getting the info in on time ad/or computer issues.

Sorry you are under the weather. And it is tough when you work so hard to save and things come up. At least you have the money and don't have to get a pay day loan or something like that with all the problems and fees they incur.
