Just Stuff

I drove to work yesterday -- combination of wet hair, late timing, and the need to stop at PetSmart on the way home. I bought gas for $31. I did the PetSmart stop and got $19 back for returning the fish medicine. No other spending.

The funny part was, during the day I got super-worried that I had not turned the coffee pot off. My new no-frills coffee maker does not have an automatic shut-off. I knew that there was a large amount of coffee in the pot, so it wouldn't burn up the pot or start a fire, but I expected a real stink when I got home. Nope! I had turned off the pot, just must have done it unconsciously.

The fish seem unchanged today, no better, no worse. I'll try to do a 40% water change tonight, and another before I leave for the weekend.

I'm going to see my brother this weekend. It's a three-hour drive. Normally I like to take Friday off, so I can leave early and avoid rush hour. However, now that I will soon be getting paid for my unused vacation and sick days, I have a strong incentive not to use them! I will soon have vacation all the time, anyway. So I guess it will be a frustrating evening drive through the city. At least it's not a holiday weekend.

We had a very interesting presentation at work yesterday which outlined the college's plan to reduce the budget by $6 million. Glad I'm not in charge of THAT budget! Only half will be achieved by staff reduction; there will be many other cuts as well. I'm glad my retirement came along at the right time, I think it will be difficult going forward.

Oh, and I forgot to say -- I'm getting reimbursed for that workshop after all! But then I signed up for a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's studio, so that's another $17 out!

Hope Friday's traffic is tolerable, have a great weekend. Coincidentally, our School Board Chair was interviewed on TV this AM in a tear because the Board's budget for the upcoming school year . I figure they'll eliminate unfilled jobs across all lines and demand a tax increase, isn't that always the answer?

I happened to notice CCF remarked that she ordered cat food from PetSmart on-line and wondered if you'd consider that option. I've never thought about ordering our dog's food on-line but the next time I need to fill the disbursing canister from the bag, I'll pay attention to details given on the bag for on-line options. The idea of delivery alone is pretty appealing since just getting that bag lifted into the trunk of my car is a horrid task.

I've thought about ordering cat food -- and kitty litter -- online, but the little bit I've looked around it didn't seem to pay. And while delivery to my vestibule would help a bit, I still have the stairs to deal with....

I would also be avoiding holidays too if it's really only for a few months to get paid for them instead. Plus catching up on holidays when you first retire will be a fun thing to do

I think I'd probably do the same thing - try not to use up my vacation time when I know I'll be getting it paid out soon. I hope your trip to your brother's goes well!

I make it a point of unplugging everything I use in the morning before I go to work. Several times I have turned around thinking I didn't turn something off. All for naught, of course.

I have the same problem with an older iron with a shut off feature that no longer works. So if you leave it plugged in with the dial turned all the way to off, it will still remain warm. On more than one occasion I've used the iron and forgot to unplug it, then returned home and discovered it had been on all day. A few times I've been on my way to work and turned around to check on that darn thing because I couldn't remember if I unplugged it. Better safe than sorry and I'm too frugal to buy a new iron for that reason alone.

When I think of it, I also unplug my toaster oven from the wall when I leave.
