Depressed

October 16th, 2016 at 04:52 pm

Why am I depressed? It's the weekend; I don't have to work. I had a pretty good day yesterday. Nothing pressing on me today except a soccer game to attend.

It is a gloomy day, but I think I woke up feeling depressed. I think it may be the reading I've done on Chronic Kidney Disease, or CKD. In trying to figure out the best way to handle it, I wandered onto websites that were frightening and depressing. It's starting to sink in that I have an incurable disease that is life-threatening if it worsens. I KNOW it is so much less than others have to deal with, believe me I do! And yet it's really knocked me for a loop.

Just the diet is confusing. There are many foods I have considered healthy that are on the "don't" list. I'm supposed to eat white flour instead of wheat -- no nuts or avocados, things like that. Lots of fruit, but no bananas, cantaloupe, oranges, pears, raisins. Must keep protein low. No oatmeal. White rice is fine. Broccoli isn't. What? Crazy! I have to read more and sort it all out to make sense of it.

Now, no one has told me to restrict my diet, and the diets I am reading about are for people facing dialysis and renal failure. So I'm overreacting; but on the other hand, I do want to know what is best to do to keep my kidneys from getting worse.

But back to financial stuff. I spent $9 on lunch yesterday -- I went out with the other grandma, and we had a very nice time. I took her to Hallmark so she could pick up some ornaments, and while we were there I found the perfect gift for my granddaughter -- two kitties, one of them orange, as she requested. The other is a black-and-white, like mine. Very nice quality. She will be disappointed that they are not alive, but this is the best I can do to fulfill her request. The two kitties were $34. This morning I spent $23 on gas.

Time to start getting ready for soccer....

I'm sorry I'm have missed the post where you have chronic kidney problems. Have you considered meeting with a specialist or even functional medicine doctor, or even a nutritionist? White flour is not good for inflammation, some people avoid all products with any type of flour. Keep doing your research!!

Thinking of u CB. I like ccfs suggestions too. Read a book for fun. Take a walk. Keep busy at work. Enjoy the upcoming holidays. Love your daily posts.

I am so sorry for the medical diagnosis! I hope your doctors are able to provide the guidance you need so that you dont have to weed through learning it alone. big hugs to you friend.

CCF, I only referred to the diagnosis in passing about 10 days ago because I didn't take it very seriously. It was only after I read the followups to my labs that I realized it was more serious than I thought. Still, it's only stage 3 -- that sounds bad, but it is just kind of a "watching" stage, a sign to be careful. I'm going to keep reading about it and figure out a good diet.

I read that it takes the human mind 3-5 days to accept whatever bad news is given. Then one tends to figure out a way to either conquer or accept. I'd say this is your mind's way to figure out a way to help yourself. I think the whole diet thing is so darn confusing...all the good foods you have been eating are now not so good. I think CCF is right...talk to a specialist. Hang in there! This is scary for you. Saying a prayer for you, your health, and your comfort.

Hugs. That is alot to take in. I wonder if you don't need another whole appointment to talk about the diagnosis, what to do about it, what does watching mean, how long might watching last, diet, anything else you can do to help yourself etc. Reading medical stuff on the internet can be helpful, but it can also be scary as one's imagination takes over. Good luck!

I'd say make sure to talk to your Doctor about your concerns. The internet is full of BS. I think your Doctor could really put your mind at ease, or at least give you a practical action plan.

My dad has always had kidney issues. My sister was diagnosed with Stage 3 CKD and given 7 years to dialysis (in 2014). She has been able to reverse it, and that's someone who does not take care of her health *at all*. I give major props to her Doctor.

P.S. If dietary changes were recommended, I know 100% my sister did not follow them. & I don't recall my dad ever mentioning any dietary restrictions with his kidney disease. Makes me wonder if that's very individual and/or more important in later stages of kidney disease.

{{{{Hugs}}}}. I know it's very stressful to understand a undiscussed in detail diagnosis. It's important to query internet medical information. Since you are concerned about how diet impacts your stage CKD, you might benefit from a discussion with a nutritionist. I know from experience that a positive attitude is a powerful weapon when medicaol issues surface.

I'm sorry to hear this news. Hopefully you will get the answers you need to your questions about dietary restrictions from your doctor's office. We're all thinking of you and wishing you the best.

Lots of good thoughts and advice above. All I can offer is my sympathy--I go through a similar thing whenever I get a worrying diagnosis. Hopefully it's not as bad as it seems right now!

    I'm so sorry....I didn't know about this.

For stages 1 thru 4 you should focus on limiting salt and protein. The American Kidney Foundation recommends the DASH diet. "The DASH Diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds, and nuts. It is low in salt and sodium, added sugars and sweets, fat and red meats."

The stuff about limiting potassium and phosphorus is for those with advanced kidney disease: https://www.kidney.org/nutrition/Kidney-Disease-Stages-1-4

I would continue to do as much reading as you can from different REPUTABLE sources. Be an informed consumer, as they say.

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope you're able to consult with your doctor or a nutritionist.

Thank you, everyone, for your kindness and concern. I appreciate all your advice. Special thanks to you, Patient Saver, you have made the diet thing clear. I won't worry about potassium and phosphorus until I have advanced kidney disease. WHICH WILL BE NEVER! And thanks to you, Monkey Mama. It's good to know that others are doing fine without any particular invervention.

@CB - To be clear, I didn't say "no intervention." I just know that diet was not a big part of whatever they are doing to manage their kidney issues. I don't know what their doctors have recommended or if they are on medication, etc. In my sister's case her potassium was too low and she has managed her potassium levels with supplements. But I don't know if that's the whole of her treatment or all of the details.

But anyway, glad you are feeling better!
