Saturday Doings

March 11th, 2017 at 10:59 pm

Saturday is my day to get freebies at the grocery through the MyMixx program. This time I got a bottle of sport drink, a candy bar and yogurt. I've already eaten the candy bar and yogurt. I also picked up some granola and some 7-Up. The 7-Up I got because it was on sale, and I will need it for the punch on Friday. The granola I got because I have a lot of almond milk to use up. Total spending was $4.

I did a load of laundry - $1.50.

I bought two boxes of girl scout cookies. $10. This was a splurge, but I do like to support the organization. And I like the cookies, of course.

My grandson is sleeping over tonight, and soon we will go to the restaurant of his choice. It's a seafood restaurant, but casual. I've been promising to take him there for a long time and now seems to be the time.

My variables spending is at 82%. The restaurant will probably foil my efforts to stay under budget, but sometimes you just gotta come through on a promise.

Late yesterday I got an email from the museum with a new contract attached, no explanation. I think I have to have this new contract in order to get paid; I think that's what's been holding everything up. I don't think it necessarily means I will be called back to work, but I think I can finally look forward to a check in the mail. I hope it is a big check that consolidates all three invoices!

I went to Goodwill today, but did not step inside. I took a bag of donations, plus an old microwave that was in my storage unit. After I came home I set up a new bag in my bedroom and already have two things in it. I am not much of a de-clutterer, but I do try to put something in the bag now and then, when I run across something I know I will not use again.

I typed up another month of my mother's diary this morning. No progress in her life, really, but she took a 400-mile ride with her boyfriend in his convertible. It sure sounds like she was having fun, which is good, because there were a lot of woes ahead of her. (My dad was an alcoholic, and had a very uneven employment record.)

In looking at the diaries, I figured out that she did not keep any from 1950 to 1980. That's an unfortunate big gap that pretty much covers my whole life at home. I know she was too busy, and I know there was a lot of turmoil, but I can't help but wish that time was covered, too. Oh well. She did keep a diary from 1980 until she pretty much couldn't handle it any more in the late nineties. She died in 1999.

I'm hoping you get a big consolidated check from the museum too! Your mom probably was too busy looking after children and husband, but it is a shame; it would have been nice to read.

So wonderful you have those diaries. My sister just uncovered our mother's diary from 1951, and it's interesting to hear what she shares. The diary and my sister are all the way across the country, so I'll need to wait until I visit to read for myself.

That's why I am transcribing the diaries, so I can share with my siblings -- and children, if they are interested.

    Hope that big check comes!

Your mom's diaries sound great. It is interesting knowing what you know about her turmoil coming later. My great aunt kept diaries for a part of her life and the sad thing is she never really put in all the things. She married late in life and unfortunately her husband who traveled quite a bit cheated on her. She never let on. Of course this was during the 40s and 50s so that might have had something to do with it.

Hope your meal with your grandson was superb!
