More Fees

July 11th, 2017 at 03:26 pm

So, I've already renewed my driver's license and I've replenished my tollway pass. Now I see that AAA has withdrawn their membership fee, another $58. Yikes. When it rains, it pours.

Yesterday I missed out on pizza day at Planet Fitness, but this morning I got my free bagel for breakfast.

Yesterday's baseball game was rained out after a few innings, so tonight's game will be a double-header, at least that is the plan, not confirmed yet. It is in a more western suburb, so it will be a late night for me.

Today I'm doing laundry ($1.50) but have no other plans to spend money.

Temperatures are going up again, so the AC is on.

I've gone back to working on my mother's diary. Nothing really interesting to report. I am now at the point in her life when she is realizing she is pregnant with her first child, my brother.

I was invited by an old friend at the College to attend a gathering in honor of the annual jazz festival in September. I told her I would. I need to get out more and meet new people -- even if they live too far away to befriend. Anyway, it's free dinner, in exchange for a dessert! Always a good deal.

I'm reading a book on Retirement 'Different by Design' and I'm freaking out by the psychological, behavioural and financial adjustments required. I hope current problems are just the medical issues of the moment [mostly side effects of these powerful drugs]. I'm having to share household tasks with DH and not allowed to drive. While he can grill, cook eggs and spaghetti, I can't watch DH make meals for laughing to tears. We did laundry together yesterday...not a good idea! Can I run away from home?

Do you review spending July 2016 to anticipate costs for July 2017? DH is horrified by most of my routines.

You know, I think it was in the back of my mind that July was a high-spend month, but I just didn't remember it, so it took me by surprise. I wouldn't have done anything different, anyway. I have the money in savings.

Years ago, Snafu, my husband had to help me with the laundry because I had surgery and couldn't lift anything. And yeah, it was both scary and entertaining. I have tried every so often to bring him in and show him how to use the machines. He isn't interested. It's not that I want him to do laundry, but if I cannot, or I die before he does, he will be in a world of hurt on normal stuff like laundry. Hang in there, Snafu!

CB and Snafu, as we retire and age, research shows it is important to get out and socialize to keep the brain healthy. DH would be happy sitting in front the television every night so that has become a challenge. He will go out if his best friend calls and we eat out, but lately his friend hasn't called and when we called, they were busy. So, I'm going to have to get busy and make arrangements with some other friends.

Oh snafu--it must be frustrating. When I had pneumonia a few years back, it drove me half crazy to see the condition of my kitchen, but then I'd fall asleep. Hang in there. CB--you're amazingly social, I think. You've have such great family and friends. Rob--go out! Maybe your husband will be inspired to go too. If not, self-care is pretty darn important.
