I Let Her Go

February 27th, 2018 at 05:11 pm

I took my dear Mystery to the vet this morning. She agreed that it was probably time, and I held her in my arms while she went to sleep for the last time.

As you might expect, I'm unbelievably sad. She was a part of my life for so long! My son found her on the streets when he was a college student. She was pregnant, and we let her have her litter and found homes for all the kittens. My son still has one of her sons.

We used to kid that she was really a dog, because she was so outgoing and friendly -- and loving -- to everyone. The sweetest cat you could possibly imagine.

My son just texted me that she had the best life a cat could have.

As you all know, I am not tech-y at all, but I'll try to post a picture.

Sorry. It didn't work. Wish you could see her. She was a beautiful black and white cat with big green eyes.

I'm sad too, these are our fur babies, an important part of our family. I am sorry for your loss. You are wonderfully kind to have given kitty the best possible life and even more thoughtful to bravely let her go without having her knowingly suffer. Thank you

I am so sorry for your loss.

The first time I had to put a pet down, a friend told me the following: "Only God knows the exact best moment for a life to end. We can't know for sure. So either we err on the side of keeping them alive longer than ideal, in which case, they experience unnecessary suffering, or we err on the side of letting them go too early, in which case, they have lost a bit of lower-quality life. When you choose to have a pet put down, you are helping them avoid unnecessary suffering." That framing has made these very hard decisions easier. I am sorry you had to make the hard decision today.

May her memory be a blessing.

Thank you, all. I really appreciate your kind comments. It is because our pets bring us so much joy that we feel so much sorrow at their passing. I was lucky to have her in my life!
