Murphy!

October 20th, 2019 at 03:01 pm

I got a call at 3 am this morning. I didn't recognize the number, so didn't answer, but then it started ringing again. I answered this time, and it was the police.

It turned out that an impaired driver smashed into two cars that were parked on the street. One of them was mine. The trunk is completely smashed in. The car has been towed away. I will try calling insurance today, but I don't think I will actually reach anyone until Monday.

I have a bad feeling about this. It's a 2010 Honda Civic and I bought it for $10K. I think it may be totaled, especially if the frame has been bent. I don't know what they'll give me if it's totaled, but I suspect it won't be $10K. I only have $3900 in savings to put toward a replacement.

And I'm going to be without wheels for a while. Luckily, I am well-stocked with food and don't really have to go anywhere. I've let DS know that I probably won't be available for music lessons this week.

I'm kind of stunned, but I am thankful that it was only this. When the police started out the phone conversation with "There's been an accident..." my heart was in my mouth.

Oh No CB! Does insurance cover a rental car if need be? I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.

I am so sorry! You will get something from insurance, but you are right it is rarely ever what we paid for the vehicle. It sounds like no one was hurt. This too shall pass, good luck with all the particulars in the meantime.

So sorry this happened; glad you weren't in it!

The EXACT same thing happened to us - the drunk smashed into my husbands car (totaling it) and then sideswiped my daugher's car which were sitting in front of our house. Insurance was fantastic, but unfortunately, only gave us a small amount toward the car which was SUPPOSED to last until my husband retired in 4 years (and it would have, it was a great car).

It is a royal pain in the neck, but at least no one was in the cars at the time!! Our idiot had no insurance, hope you are luckier!!!

There should be a central phone number for your insurance company that takes claims calls 24/7. If you have rental car coverage, they should help you with that today. If you got a police report number or something similar, that should help get the ball rolling.

I am very sorry. Hopefully you have rental car damage. Glad you weren't in the car when it was hit. I also hope the person who did this has insurance.

Oh, that's horrible. I hope it all works out in your favor. I nearly hit a car last night who ran their stop sign. It was very scary and I kept thinking how bad it would be if our car was totaled. It's a 2011, but it only has 44,000 miles on it. I doubt we'd have gotten that value out of it.
