Bagel Day -- Not

March 10th, 2020 at 03:18 pm

Just came home from the gym -- it was supposed to be Bagel Day, but they did not order the bagels. Supposedly because they are in the process of remodeling, but I think they just didn't want to do it. I wonder if there will be some pushback. The place is run by a bunch of kids who are probably short on judgment.

Anyway, I did my workout and then came home and made pancakes, using up the last of the applesauce in the batter. Tomorrow I can shop again. I will try to control myself.

Yesterday it was cool and rainy, so I decided to go to a nearby mall to walk rather than try and dodge the raindrops. I haven't done this in quite a while, and I was surprised by some of the changes. Retail is definitely ailing. It is sad.

But I did find a dime -- and six cents the day before!

Today I need to get back to studying my manual, but it is in the back of my mind that I don't really have to work the polls. I can still bow out. It worries me a little that there will be so many people coming and going, touching equipment, and here I am, an older person with an underlying medical condition. Is it foolish to do this? Or foolish not to? There are a lot more cases diagnosed in my county, and it looks like it will only get worse.

And the stock market is not making me happy, either. I am glad that only about 20% of my nest egg is invested in the stock market.

If you think that any flu or cold would compromise you, then don't go. Because that is what this is, a respiratory illness. However, you seem fine going to the gym and other places where people congregate, so I would think you are already willing to take the risk. I saw numbers in the UK with confirmed cases and the deaths, the rate was .006%. China has major pollution, which adds to the stress on the immunocompromised. The news is ALWAYS going to hype it because they make money on views and clicks. I know it looks dire, but it really really isn't. And why these governments and schools and events are cancelling is very out of proportion. I have family flying all over the country this month for various things, including my 72 year old father. Most people won't get it and most will recover. If you are really concerned I'd call your doctor's office to see if they suggest you start self isolating considering your specific condition. Fear suppresses the immune system too, so it would be wise to not do anything that is causing you fear, which might mean avoiding the news for awhile.

It is not really fear, but caution that is leading me to ask these questions. The gym is a controllable environment -- I'm there for 30-40 minutes, the equipment is constantly cleaned and users are encouraged to wipe it down after use -- most wipe before and after these days! Election Day would be quite different -- at least 14 hours stuck in one room, a wide variety of people coming and going and talking to me face to face. Handing papers and cards back and forth. So of course I wonder if it's foolish, since I am in the demographic that is at risk of death. That said, I am going forward with plans to do it; will just wash and sanitize as much as I can.

I don't really think the news is hyping it; we have the opportunity here to contain this and not let what happened in China and Italy happen here. I hope people take heed.
