Emma

March 21st, 2020 at 11:15 am

My big expenditure yesterday was to order "Emma" on Amazon Prime. It was $20, but worth every penny to me. It was just what I needed. Frothy and delightful. The best distraction I've had.

I trimmed my bangs, since I won't be getting a haircut any time soon. Maybe I will let it grow out a little.

I made the mac & cheese, the old-fashioned way -- baked in the oven with bread crumbs on top. It was delicious. Today I'm making the oatmeal cookies. It seems in the new reality, I can only cook/bake one thing per day. I get tired so quickly.

My neighbor called me yesterday and left a message asking me if I was going to Trader Joe's, because she needed eucalyptus for a wreath. She was not at home, so I don't know what the back story was, but it didn't sound like an emergency to me. She didn't know I was sick, of course. When I told her, she sent me links for getting tested, all the stuff I've already tried. People who aren't sick still believe that everyone who needs it can get tested. I didn't argue with her but just told her that I was getting better and probably past the point where I needed it.

That was just about the time that it was announced that our state was issued a stay-at-home order, so maybe that woke her up.

It's turned very cold today, so I probably won't be going out for a walk. I'll do my at-home exercises.

I'm planning to go to the grocery store next Thursday when my 14 days are up (trusting that all symptoms will be gone by then). I've got 13 things on my list, but two of them are toilet paper and paper towels, so I hope the hoarders will have left something for me. A package each would make me happy. (Grocery shopping is not forbidden, nor is going to the bank, the gas station, the pharmacy, the doctor, or the restaurant for a take-out order. Basically it is gatherings which are denied.)

CB, normally I gobble up all things Austen, but something about the Emma previews turned me off. I am interested to read you liked it. I will have to reconsider.
Good to hear you are starting to feel better.

From the previews, I thought the movie might be overly silly. It was indeed light and humorous, but I think it captured the spirit of the novel.

I haven't read Emma in a while so I don't know how well it captures the book. The movie was visually very appealing though. I would watch it again just for the beautiful cinematography.

My husband has a friend in New York that is in the national guard and they were helping with security at the testing site. 96% of those tested had negative results. Seemed everyone wanted to just get tested even if they had no symptoms and they eventually just told people if they had symptoms to just go home and self quarantine, they weren’t going to be getting treated unless the symptoms were serious. I read that 86% of the population that gets infected will have zero to mild symptoms and because of that, they will not even bother to get tested. So the numbers of those get the virus versus those who have serious problems with the virus will be very underreported.
As for trimming your bangs, I hope you didn’t try to take off too much. A friend of mine stopped by for eggs and was complaining about her hair as she was pushing her bangs out of her eyes. She said she was going to take kitchen shears to chop them herself. She said she never tried before, but her bangs were out of control. I told her don’t do it! You will be sorry and I volunteered hubby to trim them for her. He cuts my hair and gives my boys their haircuts at home. She said ok, and hubby got his shears and a cape. He trimmed them to the middle of her eyebrows as she asked. She was happy with the results. She said if her salon doesn’t open soon, she would be back for a full haircut. I told her just don’t try to cut her own hair. She promised.
