Contractor Visit -- and the Chair

July 2nd, 2020 at 11:14 pm

The ceiling contractor came today and looked over the ceiling and the layout of my condo. I gave him a check for half of the total cost, and I will give him the other half when the work is done. Right now it looks like that will be August. He will send me some possible dates.

I am going to be careful to spend as little as I can during this time. This being a cash transaction, I will be a little cash poor.

Soon I will be going to another of GS1's baseball games. I will be taking the chair with the faulty bag. I have tied the strap to a plastic loop, but I don't know if it will hold. I can't sew the strap; it is too thick.

Since the chair itself is mostly fine, I may invest in one of those log carriers to haul it around. That will be easier than struggling to get it in the bag, anyway.

But I will also put a new chair on my wish list for my birthday.

I'm surprised you paid for something before complete. We never pay a contractor until the work is complete. A good contractor can foot the bill for materials without a deposit in our experience. I know you mentioned you checked reviews, so you are probably fine, just surprised me to read. One time we did buy the tiles for a shower remodel but we bought them and brought them home, so no money was given to the contractor directly.

That seems to be the way business is done around here. When I talked to the furniture refinishing guy, back when I was interested in getting my table refinished, he quoted the same arrangement -- half payment up front, half upon completion. Anyway, this business seems to be highly respected in the community, so I am not worried.

I bet a shoe repair place can fix your chair bag.

In my area, we also have to put down a deposit to get any work done. It's usually more like 25%, but they won't do anything without that. I've read the advice many times not to pay anything down as reputable contractors can get net30 or net45 terms on the materials, but when no one will work that way, you're kind of stuck.
