September Recap

October 1st, 2025 at 03:39 pm

This September was a bit challenging. It's one of the months when I have two grandchild birthdays, and I always give $200 to each for their college funds, as well as $50 each for a gift of their choosing. I used to give more, but this is what I can do with the budget I have now. So that was a big hunk off the top. Also, I bought a plane ticket to Oregon (to be used at the end of this month), and I had to pay wheel tax and replenish my tollway pass. Other than that it was a month of this and that. I bought a new popcorn popper, I gave $33 to charities, I got a haircut, I bought painting supplies so my grandson can paint my bathroom (he hasn't found time yet Smile), I went out to breakfast with a friend, went to an out-of-town wedding, went to a movie, had some dry cleaning done -- the stuff of life.

My grocery spending was very low because I challenged myself to eat out of my pantry and freezer. It was only $73. And my pantry and freezer are still pretty full! I'm going to continue the challenge.

Looking ahead, October should be pretty calm. I'm visiting my son in Oregon at the end of the month. As noted above, I have opted to fly rather than take the train. It's so much cheaper -- unless you take coach on the train, which means you sit up for two nights -- I've done that, no thanks. I am quite anxious about flying, even more so in these times when you don't know if there are enough air traffic controllers at the helm. Hopefully, the government will be running again by that time, if you want to even call it running. Sigh.

Can you tap your funds more in september and ease back elsewhere? Can your income be annual and you ebb and flow based on how things go?

LAL, that's basically what I do; I have savings to cover any monthly overspending that occurs. I just like to protect my savings as much as I can.

I mean but it's not savings it's just an annual spend so you are allowed to spend it all in january and nothing the rest of the year. Then anything above say $6k or $500 a month you do tap actual savings. But instead you look at the annual budgeted amount.

Sorry about September being a challenge, but you are good about squeezing as much as you can out of what you have. November is going to be challenging with two grandkids' birthdays as well as buying food for Thanksgiving.
