Voluntarily housebound

January 18th, 2008 at 04:03 pm

Well, I ventured out once yesterday, just to check the mail. It looks like neither the mail or the paper was delivered. Being from the Midwest, it really amuses me how freaked out people down here get about a little snowfall. This is nothing! But I admit, the possibility of ice is scary.

Today I may stay in as well, not because of the weather, but because it guarantees I won't spend! Well, unless I shop online, but I don't do that except at Christmas.

My plans for today are to do a load of laundry and make an eggplant casserole. I am a very frugal laundress. I don't make my own detergent or anything like that -- I've tried but didn't like the results. But what I do is use just a smidgeon of detergent and then let the laundry soak all day. In the early evening I'll let the washer run and finish up. My laundry is always very clean and I go through detergent very slowly.

I am having a lot of trouble with my wireless mouse, which I used to love! Now it just stops working for no reason. Then it starts up again for no reason. I have changed the batteries, cleaned it, etc. but it still fails suddenly. I don't want to have to replace it, even though it's not a lot of money. I'm trying so hard to spend NOTHING NECESSARY this month, and a mouse isn't necessary, is it, on a laptop? I can use the pad, I just don't like it....

How about looking around for one that is free after rebate? Or asking for one on a local freecycle board?

I use Trend detergent and it only cost $1. It works fine for me.

I agree about detergent. You don't need to use as much as the manufacturers suggest. I have also been using less and don't find any differences. Some items have to be presoaked if they have stains anyway.

Another tip: When you're dividing up your ground meat, i never put exactly 16 ozs. I do have a weighing divice. I sometimes put 14 ozs depending on what it is. That's almost a way of getting another serving or pound if you buy more than 5 lbs.

I have a 1/8 cup measuring spoon tied by my washing machine. That's it - that's all. 1/8th of a cup will get your clothes clean and you don't get that yucky soap build-up stuff.

Julie I wish I knew where you found your Trend. I think that is the name of the stuff I used to use before I moved (from Dollar General). Anyway, I paid $1.25 for a big bottle. I can't find it here, so I been using purex when its bogo at walgreen with coupons. I get like 8 everytime they do that.
