Wild Weather

April 10th, 2015 at 01:01 pm

We had some wild weather last night. I don't think they've come anywhere near to assessing all the damage, but tornadoes hit heavy in north central Illinois. Many homes destroyed, and at least one fatality. They did not come near our area, but we did have thunderstorms and winds.

I spent the evening listening to the weather reports and packing for my trip. I am leaving the cats and fish alone this weekend, as my son is vacationing too. It makes me nervous, but they all have plenty of what they need. I'll have to deal with a pretty dirty litter box when I get home.

I drove to work, and I bought breakfast on the way ($4). I have lunch already here in the fridge, but I'll be buying dinner somewhere on the way to Michigan. I also have to stop at the grocery and pick up rolls. I know it will be a grueling trip. I hate to drive around the bottom of the lake on Friday nights (always jammed!) but that's what I have to do.

I just got notice that $42 will be added to my checking account; reimbursement for transit. That assures me that I will be able to sweep $1600 into savings this payday. I will probably put it in the slush fund so that it is nice and plump as I go into the uncertainties of a new budget, post-retirement.

Safe travels! I was in class last night and several people commute from Rockford. It was pretty scary listening to how bad it was out that way.

They showed the damage being done by high winds and tornadoes in what they described as north of Chicago on every news report and breaking news inserts last night non stop here in the Canadian west. Since they repeatedly said it was a broad swath past the suburbs of Chicago, I was relieved you were safe and not traveling. I hope you're not driving through the damaged region to your Michigan destination. Stay safe.

Would you feel more comfortable and secure creating a 'Retirement' budget adding breakfast take-out, + fuel/auto operation/monthly transit pass to try out and experiment with for the transition period mid April until final day? Will you leave earlier than scheduled to use your vacation days or take pay in lieu and pay the extra taxes?

It was dicey here last night too. The strong stuff stayed further to the south, but I wasn't thrilled to have to go up to school last night. In the end we just got a lot of rain which will green my yard just right for house showings just around the corner.

    Have a great trip!

No, I will not be traveling near the area where the damage was done, but I appreciate your concern!

I have already been tinkering with a post-retirement budget -- the only uncertainty is I don't know the exact amounts of income because of withholding, and Social Security payments will not begin until my birthday in August, a couple of months after I retire. My nerdy self has it all figured out on spreadsheets, but a nice slush fund will make me feel even more secure.

We got rain here, but not much in the way of wind. I hope you have a great trip!

You aren't kidding about the wild weather up near you. So sorry that those had damage and a life lost. Thursday we had two tornado warnings and the day before we had hail and some folks had damage. I like spring, but hate the storms. Glad you are OK.
