Mail Fail - Again, But Different

January 30th, 2020 at 09:03 pm

I'm so mad. My neighbor has brought me three packages that were delivered to her address, not mine, because the labels were screwed up. Why? Because my address has a 1/2 in it. Oh yes. It contains the dreaded slash, an "improper symbol" that a whole lot of address formatting systems will not accept. So people on the mailing end get creative, and my mail goes to Timbuktu.

Three packages is bad enough, but this morning I learned that the $800 check from the warranty company was mailed to me on December 15, and I never got it.

How much else have I lost?

I can't even order a pizza, because it will get delivered next door, if I don't physically intervene with the delivery person.

My address is USPS-approved. It is a perfectly legitimate address. It's these stupid software companies that are messing me up, and there doesn't seem to be any solution, as long as they are allowed to refuse correctly formatted addresses.

I can get a PO box, but then I have to pay for it, and I have to go get the mail, and I even have to pay to park at the post office! I don't want to!

Anyway, I am having the check reissued and mailed to the dealership, where I will go pick it up. So I will finally get my money.

What a pain. Of course, having a fraction in your address is pretty odd so I can see that causing a problem. It's like Harry Potter trying to find train platform 9-3/4 at King's Cross Station. I wonder what possessed them to number the properties that way.

Oh my that has to be very frustrating! Have you gone to your local post office to ask if they have any resolutions for this issue.

I wonder if there is a process to request a change to your address number?

Too bad it is not a letter. 109B seems to work better than 109 1/2.

DS, the property is almost 100 years old, and the numbering dates back to the beginning. I suspect it was simply a mistake -- not enough numbers were claimed so they had to add a 1/2 to one area. I chuckled at your Harry Potter reference!

CCF, the post office can't do anything; the problem is the mailing labels that are generated with a bad address. It's the same as someone writing it down wrong.

LB -- can't change my address number without moving! And it's not just me. There are five other units in this building with the same problem.

I should make clear that most of my mail arrives correctly addressed. What worries me is the mail addressed wrong that I don't even know about.

I deal with the address updates at my job. The USPS offers a free service to businesses to validate addresses. Sounds like your problem is coming from the companies that don't bother to use it.
You might benefit from another service the USPS offers - Informed Delivery. You get a daily email with images of what's being delivered (mostly, not magazines and some advertising) and any packages.
Hmm, seems I can't pass the Captcha if I post the link here, but you can find it. Smile
