Yesterday

June 3rd, 2020 at 01:41 pm

Yesterday was just a quiet day for me. I walked to the tiny library and exchanged a book, and then I walked to DS' house and talked to the whole family through the window. Later in the day it got really hot, and I turned on the AC and left it on last night. This morning it is cool enough to do without.

I slept late this morning and did not see the local news, so I don't know if last night's protests were more peaceful. It does seem that across the country they were.

I will go to Sam's tomorrow if they are going to reopen the concierge service. But I wonder if this is going to be an excuse to do away with it.

I am totally on the side of the (peaceful) protesters, but I do worry about all the crowding together, and what this will do to the spread of the virus. Surely there will be a big surge across the country, because the virus wasn't even really backing down yet. I see people wearing masks, but I don't think that helps a lot when people are massed together and shouting.

Now that I know I have no immunity I am more determined than ever to be careful.

As someone said, these protesters will be a bit of a litmus test. There will either be a vast increase in Covid-19 cases or we have all been (more or less) hoodwinked by the government.

I'm worried about that as well. In the Twin Cities, I do see more distance between people than at the usual march or rally, and a lot of masks--definitely being safer than the barhoppers in Wisconsin or those awful pool parties that made the news a week or so ago--but it's still a risk to be out there.

We'd just started to plateau here in terms of COVID cases. We'll start to know in two weeks how well the protesters did to protect themselves and each other. (If there's not a big spike it will NOT be because we were "hoodwinked"; it'll mean the protesters practiced enough social distancing to stave off a big outbreak.)

Ceejay, I'm not sure if we'll know it's *just* the protesters since the outdoor dining, shopping with some restrictions and Salons have also opened up. Also over 80% of our deaths come from assisted living and care homes. I believe some folks expected that the cases not increase dramatically this summer but resume in the fall. (heavy sigh).

True, good point. Not many places around me have opened on the date because of the damage, so it's easy to forget that stage has begun.

I have noticed that the peaceful protesters are wearing masks and trying to be more careful about keeping distance between them and the rioters are not wearing masks and not being careful. So maybe the sort who are prone to riot will covid themselves right out of the gene pool, while the peaceful protesters will be fine. I'm tired of the media acting like peaceful protests and riots are the same thing. They are NOT. This deserves a peaceful protest. It does not deserve this kind of violence, arson, and looting.
