My Sunday

July 9th, 2012 at 02:45 pm

I went up to see the kids and grandkids on Sunday. We went to an ice cream shop and Barnes & Noble. At the ice cream shop I got a free sundae. It was a promotional deal that my DIL had on her iPhone. I was the only one who could use it, however, because I was the only one who wanted a sundae with only one topping -- strawberries! It was a child-size sundae, but just right for me. Yes, it was a cheat on my low-carb diet, but a delicious one!

At Barnes & Noble I spent $30 on birthday gifts, a book and a game. I've learned not to pass up good gifts when I see them -- getting stuck at the last minute is a definite budget-buster. I am not taking these out of my $300 challenge because birthday gifts are planned, not incidental.

So I still have $64.

I did waste a lot of gas -- my son and I did some driving around looking for open houses and a comic book store for him. Then I made TWO wrong turns coming home. You'd think I'd know the way by now! The truth is, there are so many different routes, and I'm always looking for a better one, but it usually backfires.

I looked at a really nice condo yesterday. It is priced higher than I should pay, but I will ask my realtor if he thinks it is worth it to put in a low offer. It's in a vintage building in a lovely neighborhood, has an updated bathroom (whoo-hoo!) and ample closets, great wood floors, nice layout. The kitchen is fine, the bedroom small but fine, and once again a very nice dining room. Obviously the dining room was a very important room back in the 20's when all these vintage buildings were built! I like it. I've always lamented the disappearance of the dining room in newer housing.

I know things are slow....

July 7th, 2012 at 03:14 pm

when I am one of the most active bloggers!

Where is everybody? On vacation? I hope we haven't lost people.

With my available funds so low this month, I started a list of necessities that will probably come up. I have two things on the list so far: cat food and dishwasher detergent. Then I thought, no, dishwasher detergent isn't a necessity. I have plenty of dishwashing liquid and could easily wash dishes by hand when I run out of detergent. I'm actually doing this quite a bit already because I'm using pots and pans so much more with this low-carb eating plan. My pots and pans do not clean up well in the dishwasher.

There is no way around the cat food. I can make it last longer, though, by mixing it with the cheap food I had on hand for the feral cats. All the the cats I used to feed have disappeared. I'm not going to dwell on what happened to them, but I'm not putting food out any more and I have more than half of a big bag left. I can't use it exclusively for my cats, because one has a sensitive stomach and he throws up cheap food. I think he'll be okay with a mixture, though.

A haircut is a maybe. It's time, but I think I can trim my bangs and squeak out a few more weeks.

I am close to 450 on Swagbucks, but I won't count the Amazon $5 as income. I'll be using Amazon bucks for gifts this year. I not only have the usual birthdays and Christmas, but a wedding as well this year.

I will probably have to fill the tank again this month, too, but I'll try to limit my driving. When this heat wave breaks (if it ever does) I can start walking to work again.

I've had a special challenge at work. I am a veteran brown-bagger; I've brought my lunch almost every day for years. But they are remodeling the break room, so, while there is access to the refrigerator, there is no access to the microwave or toaster oven. Also, until Friday afternoon, the fridge was full of food that had to be thrown out due to the power outage. So it was not really usable yet. I went home for lunch two days this week. Low-carbing it makes bag lunches a little more challenging, even more so when the food can't be refrigerated or warmed up.

Now that I think about it, I CAN use the microwave on the main floor, so that is probably what I'll do next week.

See, that's what's so good about posting here! Just talking about it makes me think of solutions!

The $300 challenge

July 6th, 2012 at 04:44 pm

Today three automatic payments hit -- Nicor (gas) - $17, AAA - $57, and Netflix $8.

None of these come out of my $300 challenge.

A few days ago my semi-annual insurance payment was withdrawn -- $379.

I also gave $10 to a fund for a bereaved co-worker. I am on the fence as to whether this "counts." In the past couple months I've included small gifts in the $300 challenge, but I wouldn't count, say, a $100 wedding present. I suppose that is inconsistent. But my logic is, a large gift would be a planned-for expense while the small gifts are incidental.

So, counting the $10, I have $64 for the rest of the month. Yikes!

It does look like one of my planned dinners out won't materialize until August. That will help.

I also think my groceries will last pretty well for the month. After a week, the freezer is still packed. So, while success looks bleak at this point, I MIGHT just make it!

Back to Work

July 5th, 2012 at 04:03 pm

Finally, things are up and running around here, though an unlucky 1,500 homes are still without power in the Western suburbs. I'm back at work, but kind of at loose ends because I have to wait for others to catch up on their jobs before I can do mine.

So I did my June recap:

Rent: 1132
Medical/Health: 321
Vacation/Travel: 303
Fees/Services: 144
Groceries: 117
Utilities: 100
Eating Out: 41
Gas: 39
Clothing: 20
Gifts/Charity: 14
Vet/Pet Supplies: 13
Entertainment: 8
Personal: 3

Grand Total: 2268

Medical was two doctor's appointments and some vitamins/supplements.

Travel was mostly my trip to the workshop. May be reimbursed.

Utilities were low because I didn't pay a water bill. It is an automatic payment so I don't know what's up with that.

The fees included vacuum repair, workshop fees and an I-Pass.

The clothing expense was actually the cost of alterations.

Everything else is self-explanatory.

Not Much to Report

July 4th, 2012 at 05:07 pm

I'm off work again, of course, because it's July 4. The family has nothing planned -- or nothing I know about, anyway. It's really too hot for a picnic, or anything outdoorsy. I really wish that more communities were cancelling their fireworks. It is way too dry. It's dangerous.

I went out twice yesterday -- once to go to physical therapy, only to find out I wasn't scheduled, and then at 2:00 for the appointment I made.

No spending.

I got an email from my realtor, but it's still a case of nothing happening. I won't withdraw my offer, but I'm going to start looking in earnest again once the heat wave breaks and everybody has power again.

Day Two Off Work

July 3rd, 2012 at 03:27 pm

Still no power at work, so I'm off today again. The funny thing is, there is so much to do at work I wish I were there! We closed the fiscal year last week, but still have many gifts to process and get on the books. Many gifts came in via the website, and those are just sitting. It's frustrating.

But I will enjoy my leisure time.

I had a great low-carb breakfast this morning. Scrambled eggs and mushrooms, bacon, strawberries with cream and coffee. I miss the flour and sugar a little, but I feel so much better, it's worth the sacrifice.

Yesterday I filled a precription. Though it came from my flexible spending account, I will still count it in the $300 challenge. That put me down to $71. I earned $3 from Pinecone, so I think I'll add that to my total; so I have $74.

I'm supposed to go out with my supper group this month, and I'm also supposed to meet my old boss for dinner. I should also get a haircut, though I can probably trim my bangs myself and otherwise be a little shaggy.

And I still haven't scheduled my DIL's birthday dinner.

Condo update: my realtor said the seller is out of the hospital, but medicated. No action there.

Power outage

July 2nd, 2012 at 06:05 pm

In my last post, I expressed gratitude that I hadn't lost power. About an hour later, I did! A fast-moving thunderstorm swept through the area and tore down trees and power lines.

It was really annoying since I had just packed the freezer and fridge with much more expensive food that I usually buy, and I was afraid I was going to lose it all.

I did not touch the fridge or freezer, knowing any opening of the door would hasten the loss of refrigeration. At about 4:30, I went to McDonalds, which seemed to be an oasis of power (do they have a generator?). I ordered two double cheeseburgers and threw away one bun and sat in the coolness for a while. I went back home and read and did puzzles till the light failed, when I went to bed.

At about 8:00 pm the power came back on. I think I am okay with the food. I am sure the freezer food is okay. I may be pressing my luck with the fridge food, but today I ate strawberries, salad, ham, cheese and dressing that were in the fridge, and I am feeling no ill effects. I think the fact that I didn't open the door and that the fridge wasn't overfilled helped.

I went to work and the power was still out there. After about two hours they sent us home, since there is nothing much we can do without computers. Most people I talked to are still without power, so I was one of the lucky ones. If they don't get the power going tomorrow, we are off work tomorrow, too. And, of course, we are off the fourth.

Only $80 left for the month. Daunting. The funny thing is, when the money gets low, I get just as nervous as if I really don't have the money! I guess I have really got myself into the mindset.

Whoa! Low-carb is expensive!

July 1st, 2012 at 04:40 pm

As a matter of discipline, I did not shop until this morning, when it is actually the first of the month. My $300 has already been sorely compromised by my plan to go low-carb. (In a previous post, I talked about the book "Why We Get Fat," and my decision to go low-carb.) I spent $185 at the grocery. Now some of that is household goods and pet supplies -- I haven't split it out yet -- but even so that's a lot more than I've spent on food in a long time.

I was stocking up, and I grabbed everything that was meat and on sale. I also bought some low-carb ice cream, whole grain pasta and fresh low-carb veggies. I know I will have to do some filling in this month, but this should be the bulk of my shopping. It will have to be.

I'm going to have to learn how to do this more cheaply.

I also filled up the tank. Gas is only $3.49 a gallon, that will help the bottom line. I paid $35.

Yesterday I stayed home except for a short time I spent at a visitation. One of my co-workers lost her adult son -- so sad; it was just heartbreaking.

Otherwise, I spent the day cooking. I made two low-carb casseroles and carrot soup, which is not low-carb, but I had to use up the carrots. I'll eat it in small amounts. I watched a number of episodes of Grey's Anatomy on Netflix, read, and worked crossword puzzles. It was a scorching day, so no temptation to go outside.

No word on the condo; I'm just not thinking about it. This weather is making me uninterested in moving, anyway. Actually, I feel pretty lucky that I'm in air-conditioned comfort, with so much of the country out of power. I hope all of you are safe and cool today!

The condo, again

June 28th, 2012 at 02:13 pm

I got word from my realtor that the reluctant seller asked her realtor if I was still interested in the condo. I said yes, but explained that I had just signed a new lease (which actually hasn't gone into effect yet). My landlord will let me out of the lease, though,if I vacate by Aug.1, so time is of the essence.

Today I learn that the seller is in the hospital and "needs a few days."

I could just pull my hair out. A few days will mean having to break a new lease. My landlord is trying to work with me, but this lady is making it impossible.

I'm thinking about just walking away. I don't have to move this summer. I had already started thinking about the advantages of waiting. There will be other condos.

Meanwhile, I have a headache that will NOT go away.

Adding to the stress, work is crazy now with the fiscal year ending. That means we are trying to bring in as many gifts as possible in order to meet our fundraising goal. I made a big snafu when I entered a batch that put triple entries on each record. Jeesh. If I don't get fired this week, I guess I'm fireproof!

In a remarkable stoke of good luck, I found a $10 bill on my lunchtime walk yesterday!

Eighty-one cents

June 26th, 2012 at 06:46 pm

Eighty-one cents. That's what I have left for the next four days.

Last night I bought 18 eggs, a pound of shredded cheese, and a feminine hygiene product, for a grand total of $8.05. I have plenty of food to get through the week, and almost half a tank of gas in the car, so I should be good.

I'm pretty amazed that with all the spending challenges I had this month I still managed to come in under $300. I definitely made some adjustments I wouldn't have done without the challenge, and I've surprised myself. There's always another way!

I'm really pumped to start a new month. Just have to to lay low for a few days.

I'm anticipating that I will be able to put $600 into savings come payday.

I have another birthday dinner to make -- not yet planned. It was a June birthday, but hectic schedules are making it difficult to pick the day. If by any chance my son calls and says to do it this week, I'll count it off July's budget.

Otherwise, July looks pretty free. I have a conference in August, and a wedding in September, but those expenses will not come from the everyday budget.

The Birthday Party

June 25th, 2012 at 03:58 pm

My lunch for my DIL went splendidly. She wanted homemade tacos with all the fixin's, and carrot cake. Everything turned out well, and there were lots of leftovers, all for $29. The old tradition was taking the whole family out, which would have been WAY more expensive (though easier, I admit!)

For presents, I gave her two Fiesta bowls, an orange whip to go with her orange-accented kitchen, some new kitchen towels and cloths, some Wilton cookie cutters in snowflake shapes, and a crafts book she had put on her Amazon wish list. She seemed pleased, even though this is less, too, than it used to be. But we are all feeling the financial pinch, and I am sure she understands.

After the celebration, we all went swimming in "my" pool and then she and my son left for some couple-time while I took care of the kids overnight. Yes, I'm exhausted, particularly because I didn't sleep well (and not the fault of the children, just that off-switch problem).

Since I didn't go anywhere, I still have $9, but I'll spend it tonight for a few necessities.

While at the playground with the kids, I found a Sacajawea dollar! Awesome!

About $9 left

June 22nd, 2012 at 02:17 pm

I went to Target last night, and after using my $5 gift card, I spent $29.17 on groceries for the birthday dinner. I bought guacamole, tomatoes, creamed corn, an onion, a head of lettuce, taco shells, beef chuck, a cake mix, cream cheese, sour cream, shredded Mexican cheese and carrots. The carrots were unnecessary since I ended up buying the carrot cake mix, but I'll use them (even though they are not a low-carb veggie -- darn!)

Went home and cooked up the meat with with spices and salsa. Tonight I'll make the cake, and tomorrow morning I'll put the rest of it together.

I also did some general cleanup -- much needed. My dining room table is a catchall for paper, and instead of dealing with it properly I just put it all in a bag, but at least the table's clear. I had a pile of books to put on half.com and I got that done. I still need to repackage some booth items that were thrown into open containers -- can't have them sitting out with grandchildren around!

This morning I made a cheese omelet for breakfast -- yummy! But I didn't pack a lunch, forgetting I still had pizza in the freezer. Well, I got to work, and a co-worker was getting rid of an extra sausage burrito she had got free by mistake at McDonald's. She wouldn't take any money for it. So I have it tucked away in the fridge for lunch!

Bad news that the stock market went down. I meant to move my stock money to a savings account (for my down payment), but I didn't get around to it. Shame on me. Oh well, right now, I'm not close to a deal anyway.

Spent $10

June 20th, 2012 at 06:17 pm

Last night my son and grandsons went with me to look at the condos. Afterwards we all went out for pizza. Naturally, I had to put in my share, so there went $10.

The condos were very different from each other. Number one was small, with one bedroom, tiny kitchen and bathroom, both outdated. But its good points: great building in a great location (one block from the beach and one block from the grandchildren!), fireplace, bay window, big dining room with molding, beautiful wood floors, high ceilings, views of flowery gardens. It's on the second floor, which around here means it's two and a half flights, and laundry access is in the basement, which we entered from the outdoors. (Don't know if it has to be that way). Nice storage in the basement.

Number two: BIG condo, three bedrooms and two bathrooms, lots of closet space, wonderful large balcony. Drawbacks: right next to the train tracks, water damage on the walls, ugly carpets, not so close to the grandchildren. Also, it's a foreclosure, so nothing will get fixed.

I like number one but wish it were bigger. I'm percolating.

Back to the $300 challenge. The $10 dinner takes me down to $23 -- BUT -- I got word today that I'll get reimbursed for the workshop, so that's $15 back in. $38 for the birthday meal and general survival for the next 10 days.

I did order a book on Amazon for my DIL. Since I used gift credits, there was no expenditure.

I think I will shop for the food at Target, just because I have a $5 gift card to use. Someone at work shared three hot peppers with me so I'll have those to add to the meal, too.

Down to $33

June 19th, 2012 at 07:46 pm

I remembered I had a Wal-Mart gift card with a little money left on it, so I used it to buy cat litter and cat food. I had to pay $2.11 out of pocket, so I'm down to $33. But I got that need out of the way quite cheaply.

I spent a big portion of last evening sorting through my gift stash and wrapping presents for my two DIL's. I think I have some pretty nice things to give them. I'm struggling because I think I need a little more for one of them (even though they won't be together to compare). Ordinarily I would get a gift card, but that would take most of the money I have left -- and I still have to buy the makings for the birthday dinner. But I don't want to punish her for my "experiment."

Since I have Amazon credits, maybe I will order something from her list and tell her it's on the way. I'll look into that.

Tonight I'm going up to see two, maybe three condos. My realtor has chosen them as being in my target area both financially and geographically. Here's hoping!

Nice rental agent

June 18th, 2012 at 06:33 pm

I went into the rental office yesterday to discuss my lease. I explained how I am in negotiations to buy a condo (technically, I still was, since I didn't know till this morning that the latest and last offer was officially rejected). But I explained also that I was most likely going to have to start all over looking, and what should I do about the lease? The agent suggested that I renew, because they are seeing that sellers will often pick up the cost of breaking a lease. She will renew at the cheaper rate, even though I missed the deadline, and she told me that even though she will type up and deliver the lease today, I don't have to sign till the 1st of July, just in case I get a last-minute break.

The other option was month-to-month with a $300 per month increase, which would add up quickly, and a seller wouldn't be likely to reimburse me.

I thought she was very nice and helpful, and it put me in a good mood for the rest of the day.

Now I am trying to figure out how to stretch my last $35. I MUST buy kitty litter and cat food. I also must buy the makings for my DIL's birthday meal on Saturday. I think that money will have to come out of the slush fund as an irregular expense. DIL has asked for beef tacos, guacamole and corn casserole, with carrot cake for dessert. I don't think I can do that with the measly $24 I will have after feeding the pets, as I lack almost all of the ingredients, as well as the extras like sour cream, shredded cheese, etc. I guess I could see how close I come.

I decided what to do about my carb changeover. I will only eat carbs within a designated one-hour period in the evening. Believe it or not, that was a popular diet plan some 10-15 years ago, and it works pretty well.

But when the carbs are gone, I won't seek to replace them. I will, however, still allow some carbs when I eat out. I don't want to make this so strict that it is unlivable.

On day 2 of no carbs I am feeling pretty darn good, with no gas, no joint pain, no cravings!

Time out for sickness

June 17th, 2012 at 05:22 pm

My attention to things financial has taken a turn the last few days because I got sick. I was already on the road to the conference when I started to feel off. by the time I got there I was feverish and dizzy, and I woke up the next morning with a severe sore throat. I got through the day of the conference popping Advil. It was grueling. When I got home at the end of the day I went straight to bed and stayed there. My poor travel companion, a co-worker, had to do all the driving (and it was a trip from hell -- traffic jams, wrong turns, and a pullover by a cop!) Five hours each way. A nightmare.

On Saturday I was finally able to get out in the late afternoon to visit Urgent Care. I seem to just have a nasty virus. I'm better today.

I had been planning to go straight to the rental office when I got home to renew my lease, but now I've missed the deadline for the "good" rate. GRRRR. I'm afraid I'm really going to pay through the nose for this one.

Needless to say, I didn't look at condos yesterday, either.

I was invited at the last minute to a wedding shower for my ex-husband's daughter and didn't make it to that either. I'm planning to send her something from her Amazon wish list, since I've amassed a few credits there.

On the trip, I spent about $10 on food and I believe I spend about $38 on gas. I still owe my co-worker more for gas and also for half of the hotel room. The one good thing I can say about the whole ordeal is that it was an informative conference, and my co-worker, who is a beginner in the field, said she got a lot out of it. And that was the whole point.

I read a compelling book called "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes. It really makes a case for low-carb eating that is hard to refute. I've always felt better when eating low-carb, but haven't stuck to it. But I am inspired to do it again. The trouble is, I've got all this high-carb food in the house. I guess I will have to make a gradual change.

Met my dinner goal

June 14th, 2012 at 02:08 pm

I wanted to spend only $15 for dinner last night, and I did it! $35 left.

I ordered a shrimp creviche appetizer and drank water. I also ate a lot of tortilla chips and salsa to fill in. The serving was small, but delicious, and I actually felt quite satisfied.

Getting together with friends was priceless!

Today after work I'm off to an out-of-town workshop, so that spending will be off the table. Still, I will try to keep it down.

Down to $50 for the month

June 13th, 2012 at 06:26 pm

When I looked at my Discover bill online I "discovered" (ha ha) that the $40 payment for my I-pass had been charged. This is an automatic payment that appears whenever the the balance runs low. The I-pass is how I pay for tolls.

Since tolls are a way of life in this area, I have to count it in my $300 everyday expense, just like I would count gas. So I am now down to $50.

I'm going out to dinner tonight with a group of friends -- it's been planned for about a month and it's really hard to get all of us together. So I'm definitely going to do it. I just have to do it cheaply. I may just order an appetizer, or maybe a salad.

Tomorrow after work I have to head down to Terre Haute, Indiana, for a workshop. The cost for this is on my head, although, as a board member, the professional organization I belong to may help out. Anyway, none of this cost will count toward the $300, since it is definitely a pre-retirement type of expense!

On the plus side, I worked at a golf outing/dinner last night, selling raffle tickets, and I got a great dinner for free. You could tell it was planned with men in mind -- ribs, pulled pork and roasted chicken were the entrees, and the sides were potato salad and corn on the cob. No dieting last night!

Back from Vacation

June 11th, 2012 at 06:38 pm

My camping vacation cost me only $185! That included four days in a cabin, all the food, gas to get there, firewood, parking and other fees, and a new pair of flip-flops! The weather was great, and we did some swimming, hiking, and lots of good eating! Now it's back to reality.

I brought home all the food the others wanted to throw out, and probably have a full week of cheap eating ahead of me. Also have a free meal scheduled tomorrow night when I work at a golf outing.

Just before I left, I okayed a $125K offer for the condo with the reluctant seller. She still hasn't responded to my agent, so later in the week he is going to show me a few more places that just came on the market.

Since my vacation didn't count in my spending money, I still have $90 left.

Dinner, vacuum and camping

June 6th, 2012 at 05:22 pm

Last evening I went out to dinner with my former boss. I had estimated that I would spend $15 and I spent $14.98! It was Happy Hour at a Pan-Asian restaurant and appetizers and drinks were 50% off, so I had coconut shrimp, dumplings, and an apple martini. Yummy. That leaves me with $90.

Tonight I will finally pick up my vacuum. The serviceman had apparently had some kind of family emergency, so the repair was delayed. No problem, really, since I didn't have company, but I will be glad to give the carpet a good cleaning!

The repair cost is $89. Obviously, I can't take it out of my spending money and leave myself with $1 for the month, so I will count it as an emergency expense. (And a broken vacuum is a kind of emergency, isn't it?)

Just before I hung up the guy said, "Don't forget my Oreck!" I said, "What? It's a Dyson." No, he said. The loaner. I told him I didn't get a loaner, but that when I talked to the guy who was covering for him, we had a bad connection, and for all I know he offered a loaner. But I didn't take it. I hope this doesn't turn into a problem. Someone else has his Oreck.

Tomorrow I start my camping vacation. It's going to be pretty cushy camping -- in a cabin, not a tent. I have to bring my own linens but so far that's all I know. Oh, and I did volunteer that I would bring the coffee maker and coffee. My DIL is planning the menu; I assume I will reimburse her for groceries. Other than sleeping and eating, we will spend our days taking hikes and scouting out playground areas, maybe swimming a bit. The grandsons are only 5 and 2, so we won't be doing anything TOO adventurous!

Condo hunting & the $300 challenge

June 4th, 2012 at 05:41 pm

I looked at two more condos this weekend (open houses, not appointments). Both were in the same large, vintage building complex. They had charm but some serious drawbacks -- like ancient plumbing. So I'm still looking.

My lease has to be signed on July 1. I can either pay about $300 more a month for a month-to-month lease, or sign a 12-month lease at $22 more per month, but with the caveat that if I break it, I have to pay two months rent in penalty. (Almost $2500). Ouch. I don't like either option very much. If I can close by August 15, however, they will give me a break and let me out of the lease. But since I'm not even close to a deal now, I don't think that will happen.

In other news, I've already spent $200 of my $300 challenge money. $83 for groceries, $13 for household supplies, $11 in cat food & litter, $11 for TWO FATHER'S DAY CARDS (obviously I didn't look on the back of the card to see what I was paying. Nice cards, -- BUT!) $20 for alterations on a jacket and pants, $39 for gas, $15 for a program fee, $58 for a doctor's appointment. I believe I may get reimbursed for the program fee. Gee, and only 26 days to go!

Wow!

June 1st, 2012 at 05:19 pm

My $300 challenge makes a difference. I spent $293 on my designated categories, and that made for a low-spending month and an anticipated transfer to savings of $854!

Here's the breakdown of my total spending: $1712.

Rent - $1132
Utilities - $181
Fees & Services - $115
Vacation & Travel - $64
Groceries - $54
Gifts & Charity - $40
Gas - $38
Miscellaneous - $22
Personal - $15
Eating Out - $13
Medical & Health - $11
Vet & Pet Supplies - $11
Clothing - $5
Car Repair & Maintenance - $3
Entertainment - $8

June will be more of a challenge. I will be taking a camping vacation with the grandkids and I will have to count that outside of the $300 -- there's just no way to include it. Which is okay, I think. Once I am retired, vacations will have to come out of a savings account for special expenses -- and they will have to be cheap! (As I think this one will be). However, much of the planning will be under my DIL's control, so I will go with the flow and try to optimize my spending where I can.

Lost Plate

I realized over the weekend that I lost my front license plate somewhere. I could get a ticket for that, so last night I went to the DMV and ordered a new plate for $6. Unfortunately, until it comes (maybe August they said) I have to display the temporary plate on the back, which means I have to figure out how to change the plate. There are some wicked looking oddly-shaped screws holding it on, and I'm not sure I am up to the job.

I also put $10 worth of gas in my car, bringing my monthly allowance down to $9. With only one day to go, that's just fine.

The booth is now closed

Yep -- it's done! I packed up everything (on the hottest weekend yet, I might add) and now I have fifteen boxes in my dining room. I collected $75 in sales and will get my deposit back ($82.50) in the mail. And I will no longer have to pay rent. Yay!

The garage sale idea is on hold -- I actually have to borrow someones' yard/garage to do it, and the date I had reserved for it now will not work for either me or the owner. I've got so much going on already this summer I may just do eBay a little at a time. Or even ignore the boxes for a while.

I have $25 left in my $300 challenge, and I believe I will devote most of that to gas. I have to make a 40-minute trip to the doctor on Thursday, and I'm pretty sure I don't have the gas for it.

I will not pick up either the vacuum (which I now know will cost $89) or the alterations until after Thursday.

On my weekend trip, I spent less on gas than expected, but more on eating out -- about $20. I also spent $26 on baby clothes at a secondhand store (however, they were almost all new) and $5 on a top for me.

June will be full of expenses. I'm taking a camping vacation with my son's family; I have planned two dinners out with friends, and I have two birthdays in the family, which will entail not only gift-giving but dinner-making. (I have some gifts in my stash already). I also have to go to a workshop in downstate Indiana, for which I am shouldering some of the expense.

I've had a headache for three days now and I wish it would go away!

No progress

My seller simply rejected my latest offer without a counter. Both the realtors seem pretty amazed by her obstinance. Especially since my offer is right on the money market-wise.

My realtor advised me to just let it simmer for a couple of weeks. He doesn't believe anyone else will make a higher offer. I am fine with that. Frankly, her lack of negotiation is making me less interested rather than more interested. There are so many other options out there, and I have plenty of time.

I went to my grandson's preschool graduation last night. They wore caps but not gowns, and sang a little song using sign language. Very cute. They also showed a slideshow with each child's dream of what he/she wanted to be. My grandson said "paleontologist." And he just might be -- he is obsessed with dinosaurs.

We went out to a casual restaurant afterwards. I spent $6.82, and brought home some roasted vegetables which I will use in fried rice. I expected to pay about $10 for dinner, so was glad to come in under.

I took a present, just in case, but no one else had presents, so it will go back in the Christmas/birthday box. (It was in the car so no one knew).

My $300 account is now down to $111. I'm figuring I will have to spend about $60 on gas this weekend. I still have to pick up the vacuum and the alterations, which are unknown prices, but I'm hoping the two together will come in under $50 and I will meet my goal.

Poor planning

I didn't get it on my calendar -- my grandson's preschool graduation is tomorrow evening. Only a problem because I also have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. Both events are in the same general area, but 45-50 minutes away from work -- and I'm scheduled to work in the afternoon. I don't have ANY more vacation time to play with until the fiscal year rolls over on July 1, so I can't take the afternoon off. So it looks like I will make a long drive four times tomorrow. Oh, that's nuts. I'll try to reschedule the doctor's appointment. Hope it's not too late.

No news on the condo -- no counter offer yet to my latest offer. My son alerted me to another condo that seemed to have all the features I wanted at a lower price, but when I had my realtor check it out, he found they had already received a contract.

Soon I will have to talk to my rental agent. I am supposed to renew by June 15. I'll have to tell them what's going on, and that I'm in limbo. I hope they will give me a month-to-month lease, especially since I've been a good tenant for three years now.

No spending yesterday. I've given up on my 5-5-5 challenge, but I am trying to get in 15 minute bursts of exercise three times a day.

Last night I made a Bubba burger for dinner (veggies, too, but the story is the Bubba burger). Because it's so big and such a weird shape, I trimmed it down after cooking it to fit nicely in my smallish bun. I have a cup of white sauce in the freezer, so tonight I'm going warm up the leftover burger bits in the sauce, season it, and pour over biscuits (if I have the energy to make biscuits from scratch). Otherwise I'll just serve it over bread. That'll be a nice cheap meal. I'll supplement with veggies & fruit, of course.

Well, I'm off to make my call to the doctor! Hope I can cancel without penalty.

About the condo

The seller is holding firm for a higher price than I would like to pay. That said, in this market, prices are pretty low, and, as my realtor pointed out, it is in a desirable location and building.

I checked with my lender this morning and okayed my realtor to put in a higher offer. We're still fairly far apart, though.

I will wait and see.

As for the $300 challenge, I still have $118. But I have a 3-hour road trip this weekend, and I will have to pay for the vacuum repair and for clothing alterations. I have plenty of food to get through, I think. It will be interesting to see how close I can come, with these extra expenses thrown in. I think I have to count them. There will always be extra expenses.

Why am I writing?

I don't know why I'm even clicking the "new entry" button. Nothing much is going on today. I am sticking around home, not spending anything, not using gas.

I made some chicken teriyaki stirfry that should serve for a few lunches this week. I made extra rice, so I might make fried rice later in the week.

I did some laundry and hung most of it up to dry in the bathroom.

It's quite warm, but I am resisting turning on the air. When it cools off in the evening I'll take a walk to the dumpster and then around the big block this complex sits on.

I ate way too much of that good granola I made yesterday. It was just too good.

Think I'll boil some eggs and then I should be good on lunches for the week. I still have mac & cheese and French onion soup in the freezer. And I have five more Bubba burgers for dinners.

I finished watching Storage Wars and also watched a good Netflix movie, "Lebanon, Pa." An indie film with heart, but not too schmaltzy.

Household chores and storage wars

This morning I was a prisoner in my home, as I had to wait for the painter to arrive and paint my door -- then I had to stay inside until all the edges dried and and I could close and lock it again. I tried to be productive while I waited. I vacuumed, but it looked like the brush wasn't rotating, even though it was picking up. The area around the brush was clogged, but I couldn't figure out how to get to it. In the end I decided it had to be serviced. I've had it for three years with no servicing, so it's about time.

Then I made some granola, which made the painter remark that everyone was going to come in from the hall because of the yummy smell....

Then I tried to hem the sleeves of a jacket I've had for a while but have never worn because the sleeves are too long. I couldn't do it without puckering the fabric, so I decided to let the professionals handle that, too. As well as a pair of lined pants that I didn't even try to fix.

While I was sewing, I managed to lose a needle. No, I'm not upset about the loss of a needle, but I am upset about how I might find it. Like by sitting on it. I really, really looked, but couldn't find it.

When I was free I dropped off the vacuum and the clothes to be altered, and I also went to the grocery and picked up some kitty litter, cat food, and some fresh fruits. Spent $13.78.

I came home and spent much of the day watching "Storage Wars" on Netflix. My son told me to try it, and it is addictive! The men are pretty annoying with their competitive games, but I am fascinated by what they find in the units they buy! And it boggles my mind that people just let that stuff go because they don't pay the rent. I've never rented a storage unit -- I declutter if I don't have space. My son has done it -- and I learned first hand that everything he paid to store he considered to be junk when he finally took it out. A total waste of money.

$300 challenge & the earnest money

May 18th, 2012 at 01:53 pm

I had to express-mail the signed contract to my realtor because the fax was coming out too light. So I spent $21.95 at the post office for postage and for a book of stamps. Down to $132.

As for the $10,000 earnest money -- in the contract it states that $1,000 is to be paid upon acceptance of the offer, and then increased to a total of $10,000 2 days after. I totally trust my realtor; he is a longtime family friend; I know he would not cheat me. And he works for a very large established and well-respected Chicago realty business. So I think that is just the way it is in the city.

I do need to find out if I can in turn use the $9,000 that I get back toward my down payment. That would make things easier.

I have not been keeping up on the 5-5-5 challenge at all; I have been too involved with real estate!

Tomorrow morning my apartment's maintenance team is painting doors in my building. That means I will have to stay home until the paint dries, as the door can't be closed and locked until then. So I'll grocery shop later in the day. It should be a quick trip; I am well-stocked with meat, just need to plan some meals around what I have and pick up the few things I need.
