Weekend Update

August 18th, 2014 at 04:07 pm

For someone who's trying to earn credit card rewards, I'm finding it surprisingly hard to spend money. I'm determined not to spend frivolously, though, so I just have to find the right balance.

This weekend I spent $54 at the grocery store and $13 at Kohl's. The Kohl's spending was a top that looks like two pieces, suitable for work. It was originally $36, but with a markdown, a $10 gift card and an additional 20% off, it came to $13.

I went to an impromptu picnic this weekend with my son's family, but since I had just eaten, I just brought a bottle of water. I enjoyed the company and watching my grandsons play.

We also had a games afternoon -- Bohnanza with the boys and a new South American card game with my son (can't remember the name). More cheap entertainment, which always seems to be the most fun!

I didn't do too much cooking this weekend, like I usually do. I had four petite sirloin steaks on hand, (two packages for the price of one. I cooked two in my grill pan, eating one for dinner and cutting up the other for steak fajitas later. The other two are in the freezer, which is getting pretty full! I'm going to have to concentrate on eating from my freezer soon.

I had my free breakfast at work this morning (opening day) -- apparently I didn't take enough, because I'm starving now! That's okay; a free barbecue on the College lawn is coming up in a half hour. And I think that will be the last of the free food events for a while, at least until Homecoming.

I found .65 on the train on Friday evening! And this morning I found another penny in a parking lot, so had .66 to add to my totals.

Pay Day

August 15th, 2014 at 02:00 pm

Love Pay Day, even though it's so anticlimactic any more .... Just a few bills to pay (credit cards and mortgage) -- everything else is automated.

I sent $650 to the credit union. $321 will go to the mortgage, the rest to the E-fund.

I had a big bill to pay ($1,200+) to Chase Freedom. Already got the reward. There is $15.88 left in rewards, but I can't unlock it until there is $20. I'm not using the card now as I am charging up the Citi Thank You Card, and after that I'll be working on earning my $400 Discover bonus. So I think that $15.88 is just going to sit for a while.

Last night I stopped at Supercuts and bought a gift card for 4 haircuts for $40. Now I hope my stylist stays there for four more months!

I did have a free lunch yesterday at my meeting -- sandwich and cookies. Today I am going to lunch with others to meet with a former colleague. I have a lunch in the fridge that's been there all week, and I haven't had a chance to eat it. I think I may just eat it today, and get something minimal when I go out. Either that or freeze it for next week.

I have a $5 off coupon for spending $50 at the grocery store this weekend. I will try to hit $50 as close as possible, stocking up on sale items as much as possible.

I also have a $10 Kohl's gift card -- but it may have expired; I'll have to check it. If not, I'll go get a little gift for my grandson's upcoming birthday.

My fish with the fungus looks better today. Maybe the medication will work. Tonight I'll do the second dose.

Ran Errands

August 14th, 2014 at 02:00 pm

Well, I ran my errands on the way home from work yesterday, so I racked up a little spending.

First I went to the post office and mailed a box of books to my sister - $6. Then I took my old Samsonite bag to a repair shop. It didn't cost me anything to drop it off, but it will cost $60 when I pick it up. I am getting the wheels replaced. It is still a really good bag, so getting the wheels fixed is worth it.

Then I went to Ulta and bought nail polish to extend my manicure - $10. And then to PetSmart for a fungus cure, which cost $14.

The fungus cure is a bright green powder, which had a surprising effect on the water in the tank! The angelfish is still alive, but I think she is still in danger. The medication needs to be refreshed in 48 hours and then after another 48 hours I'll do a water change and replace the filter. Not filtering right now, as it would only pull out the medicine.

I watched "Harry and Tonto" on one of the oldie channels last night. I miss movies like that; just sweet and slow-paced, with good acting and no big drama. I saw it in the theater many years ago, and watching it brought back many memories of those times.

I didn't get my free ice cream yesterday -- I had too much cheese on my pizza at lunch, so I was lactosed out. Today, I believe I am getting a free lunch as well. We are going to a presentation by one of our Trustees on the College's historic relationship with the Church, and I believe free lunch was mentioned.

I cashed in two Pine Cone survey awards -- my snowflakes are crawling up to the $1000 range!

Oh, I forgot -- I also used a $3 birthday coupon at CVS to buy a travel comb and brush for $1.72.

The Birthday Continues...

August 13th, 2014 at 01:38 pm

Last night my son and DIL gave me puzzle books and a game for my birthday, and I hear a family picture for the wall is on the way!

They also gave me a spaghetti dinner.

I noticed last night that one of my angelfish has a growth. I looked it up, and it appears to be a fungus. So I drove today so I could stop at PetSmart to get something for it. I changed the water and filter last night, since bad water is a likely cause.

From what I read, it seems likely that the fish will die, but I want to make sure the others are safe.

Since I drove, I also grabbed a package to mail and a suitcase that needs repair. I'll make those stops, too. Oh, and I'm going to stop at Ulta to get some nail polish that matches my manicure. It's starting to show a little wear. I want to keep it going; it looks so nice.

Today there were still Cinnabons left at work for breakfast. We're having pizza at noon as a farewell for our student worker. And in the afternoon, there will be an ice cream social on the College lawn. Wow. A day of junk food! I will enjoy in moderation and get back on the wagon tomorrow.

My family's football pool is starting up again, so later today I'll be sending a $34 check to get in. I never win a thing, but it's good for the camaraderie.

Birthday Weekend in Michigan

August 12th, 2014 at 04:00 pm

I had a great time in Michigan this weekend. I boated, swam, ate steaks from the grill, drank wine on the deck, played cards, and overall just enjoyed myself immensely.

On Saturday, my SIL took me to her painting class and I produced a masterpiece (NOT) and brought it home. More on that later ...

My spending: $62 on gas, $5 for a car wash, $62 on clothing, $11 on food.

I didn't expect to buy clothing, but when I loaded my painting into the car on Monday morning, I accidentally wiped it against my pants. It was an oil painting with heavy application, so it was still wet. My good black pants were ruined. I was heading to a meeting at my old college, so I just had to apologize a lot and cover myself with paper towels. But after the meeting, I found a superstore and bought a replacement pair for $25. While at the store, I also found a perfect black purse of the type I'd been looking for, and it was another $37. What can I say. It was my birthday and I was feeling expansive.

Later that day I met with my old college professor, and it was such a good time! He asked for my life story, and boy, he got it! I can hardly believe he listened so attentively, but he assured me it was entertaining. We promised to stay in touch, and I hope we will.

So, all in all, I'm feeling really good, ready to rest up and get back in the swing of things!

All set!

August 8th, 2014 at 02:06 pm

I got my Citi card AND my check from Capital One. They were both in my stack of mail. My card is now activated and the check has been added to my EF.

Yesterday I applied for an RTA pass, which will allow me to buy reduced-fare tickets for the train. I am eligible now that I am (ahem) 65. Or will be on Monday! This will save me about $55 per month.

This morning I packed for my trip (so nice to have a new suitcase!) and I will leave from work. Unfortunately I woke up at 3 and never really fell back into a real sleep. So I will have to be very mindful on the road tonight. I will be tired. But I never fall asleep in the car -- not even as a passenger, so I don't worry about that. I just worry about attentiveness.

I'll be able to use my new Citi card for the trip and start racking up those points. Even though I don't anticipate a lot of spending!

This morning I bought breakfast at McDonalds ($4). With all I had to do this morning, I didn't have time to figure out breakfast. But I do have a lunch at work already. I'll get dinner on the road.

Oh, and it's weigh-in day, and I lost two more pounds! Woot-woot!

What's in the Mail?

August 7th, 2014 at 01:34 pm

I have a pile of mail on my desk at home that I haven't been able to get to. I have just been too tired at night to deal with anything besides eating dinner and going to bed. So there it sits.

I meant to grab it this morning, so I could open it during slow times at work, but I forgot.

I am hoping that within that pile is my new Citi card, and a $100 bonus check from Capital One. I MUST open my mail tonight, before I get on the road tomorrow for a weekend getaway.

Aside from the Citi card, I also signed up with my current Discover card to try to charge $2000 per month for five months for a $400 bonus. I don't know if I can do it, but there is no penalty for trying. Just have to make sure I don't do unnecessary spending to make the goal, but I'm not too worried about that -- I'm a pretty cautious spender. I thought it might be a good opportunity to get some big-ticket expenses out of the way. We'll see how it goes.

I have scored some free food lately -- garden tomatoes and protein bars from people at work. Yay! I'm also getting all kinds of birthday offers in my email from restaurants, etc. Tempting, but I would have to find someone to eat with me. I wouldn't feel right about going alone and ordering a free entree, for instance. So the offers are not so much of a deal for me. I have to look through them again, though. I think there are several offers for free ice cream, free muffins, etc. Not so good for my diet. There's always a catch!

I can hardly wait for my weekend! I'll be at my brother's house in Michigan again, along with my son's family. We are planning to boat on the lake and swim in the pool. I will go to a painting class with my SIL. My brother called and asked what kind of cake I like, so I know there will be some kind of food celebration! Then on Monday I'll visit my old college and a former professor who was very influential in my life. All very exciting stuff! And none of it should be too expensive.

Found $2!

August 6th, 2014 at 01:49 pm

Wow! Two dollar bills in the Walgreen's drive-thru. That gave me a lift this morning!

But I had such a downer of an evening last night. My DIL's mother called me, needing a friend. I went over there, and she spilled all her misery. She moved to our suburb about six months ago after a lifetime in a small town in Indiana. She is desperately lonely and disoriented. Of course, having never moved, she didn't know how hard it is to adjust to a new area, so she blames herself. Her wrought-up emotions spurred an argument with her daughter, which was why she was so distraught last night.

I advised her to find some volunteer work, find a small church (she hates the big ones), and also talk to her doctor about anti-depressants. She is clearly very depressed. But most of all she needs to begin to build a social circle and just give it time.

It made me realize how lucky I am to be so adaptable. I moved around all my life, so it is no surprise to me that it takes time to be part of a new community. And I am able to see the adventure in it, while for her, it is just scary. I hope and pray she comes around.

Anyway, that's how my evening was spent. I didn't even have dinner. I got to bed late, didn't sleep well, and now I'm dog-tired today. But I hope she is feeling somewhat better.

I guess the "crying office" travels with me!

In financial news, I went to a new nail shop at noon yesterday and got a really nice mani-pedi for $30, as well as a $10 gift certificate because it was my birthday month!

I need to spend tonight and tomorrow night getting ready for my trip to Michigan; time is running out fast and everything is generally in a mess right now!

Awful Day

August 5th, 2014 at 01:20 pm

Yesterday was an awful day at work. A temp employee was fired. It didn't have to happen; it was a bad chain of events, with some things not handled well.

The temp was really, really counting on getting a full-time job, which was never a given, but she didn't seem to understand that. The original plan for that job was to wait to fill it till a director role was filled. However, somewhere along the way, plans were changed (though not announced) and they started interviewing for the job. (I think because a good candidate who was personally known to the boss expressed interest.) So supposedly the job was posted. (This I don't know for sure; I never looked at the site myself). The temp did not apply because she continued to believe the director position had to be filled first. Meanwhile, we interview the boss' friend, and ta-da, she is hired. The temp still doesn't know. I didn't dare tell her, because I suspected the job had not been posted and that the higher-ups were pulling a fast one. I just stayed out of the whole mess.

Well, of course the temp eventually finds out that the job has been filled, and she's furious that no one told her. She seems to be a person with poor impulse control, so she lashed out at the boss, as well as several other people, which, of course, ended her temp employment. I felt bad because I hadn't told her, and I sensed that she was in a pretty desperate state. She came to my office and cried, and then left. (Just for the record, I seem to have the crying office. Everyone comes here to cry).

All day I felt so bad I even felt sick. What a mess.

They say the job was posted, and if only she had looked at the website and applied, all this ugliness would have been avoided. Though she still might have been angry that she didn't get the job -- which never would have happened, with this other person in contention. But at least she would have had her shot.

Ugh.

And now we have no one doing the job and three weeks until the new person starts. I don't think we are getting another temp.

In other news, today is street-sweeping day and I had to move my car. I could not find ONE parking place on the right side of the street and I combed quite a few blocks. So I ended up driving to work again, just so I had a place to put my car. At least gas prices are low.

I just feel very weary. Ready for things to lighten up a bit.

New Charger

August 4th, 2014 at 01:45 pm

I try so hard to remember everything as I go out the door in the morning. This morning, when I was at the station, I realized I hadn't grabbed my phone. THEN I realized I never took it out of my bag yesterday, so I had my phone with me, it just didn't have much juice!

I decided to bite the bullet and buy a charger in the station. I'm sure I paid top dollar ($33) but now I'll have one to keep at the office. Consider it a stupid tax.

I found another penny on the train, so that offsets the cost! Smile

Looks like I will be able to transfer $650 to savings on payday, unless I have to take money out of the bank during the next two weeks.

This week, before my trip to Michigan on Friday, I want to get a mani-pedi and vacuum my car's interior (it's a mess!) Should have done both this weekend -- I'll have to make time in the evenings. I'm leaving on the trip right after work on Friday. It'll be a traffic mess, but I like to have the whole day on Saturday. My SIL is going to take me to her oil painting class on Saturday morning -- what fun that will be!

Hit the $40 Mark!

August 3rd, 2014 at 07:02 pm

On Friday I found a nickel at the train station, which pushed my found money up to an even $40. Then, for good measure, I found a penny today in the laundry room!

Saturday was a busy day. My ex's sister and her husband were in town. They are still friends of mine, so we got together. It was their grandson's birthday, and they invited me to his birthday party at Red Lobster. I spent $14 on Legos and gift wrap, since I didn't want to come empty-handed. In turn, they paid for my dinner! Which was totally unnecessary, but they insisted.

I also did my grocery shopping. My ten items were: croutons, tuna, dishwasher detergent, granola, Grands biscuits, frozen pizza, ground beef, blueberries, cat litter, and romaine lettuce. $32. I had a 10% off coupon and a coupon to get the ground beef for 2.99 a lb. Also had a coupon for the kitty litter, which was also on sale (along with everything else!)

This morning I froze half the ground beef in patties and cooked the rest and made spaghetti sauce.

I also did two loads of laundry for $3.

At noon I made myself a salad and realized I was out of salad dressing. So I looked up a recipe and made some honey-mustard dressing. I think I'm done with buying dressing. It's so easy to make good dressing from scratch.

Tonight I'm going to have the stuffed flounder that I brought home from the restaurant, along with the green beans I got on the side. I definitely cannot eat a whole restaurant meal any more, which is a good thing! I always get an extra meal!

I've eaten all my frozen muffins, so breakfasts this week are going to be yogurt and blueberries (as long as the berries last!) and granola bars. I have lots of leftovers in the freezer for lunches. Dinners will start with spaghetti, and after I get sick of that, there is more salad, tuna, plenty of eggs, and the makings for grilled cheese sandwiches -- as well as the frozen pizza. I feel I am doing really well on my ten-item limit. I could probably even roll it back to nine and have enough to eat!

The Grands biscuits I bought are for making breakfast sandwiches. That will be next week's project, since I didn't buy sausage (or ham, or whatever filling I end up with). It didn't make the list, since nothing was on sale! But the biscuits were.

Today I think I'm coming down with a cold. My throat is sore and my head is woozy. I feel okay when I take Advil, and I think it's time again!

But I am happy to report that the pain in my legs is getting better. I even navigated the stairs today without pain. Is it the apple cider vinegar? Who knows, maybe it really does help with inflammation. And it certainly is cheap!

Exciting development!

August 1st, 2014 at 01:19 pm

The other day I got an email from an old boss -- not the one I've been talking about who went to the museum, but another one. The email merely said, "I have an idea. Let's set a time to talk."

I didn't think much about it, but when she called, it was to talk about a job! Not just any job -- this would be the best job I ever had! Now, of course, this is only talk -- I will have to go through the process, and compete with others, but the bottom line is, I am going to meet with her and the person who would be my immediate supervisor at the end of August for an informal chat. The job is not posted yet. It would be working as an assistant director at a very large and respected university -- still within commuting distance. The salary would be a $30K increase for me!

I'm afraid to hope, but this would be a life-changer for me. I would have to work for four more years, but I would be ending my career on a high note. I wouldn't have to scrape so much. I could beef up my retirement fund and pay off my mortgage. Even more, I would be able to do the work I was trained to do, and be proud of my position.

I can hardly believe I have TWO irons in the fire. I guess I am not meant to retire! But the beauty of my current position is, even if both fall through, I can still proceed with my original plan and retire next August.

I'm going to be impatient all month!

There were a lot of extra's this month -- new brakes and spark plugs, property taxes, my niece's wedding, renewal of AAA and I-Pass, a haircut, electrician's fee, shades for the dining room. The basic things were in line, or low. I'm satisfied!

Also Applied and Approved

July 31st, 2014 at 01:23 pm

Like CCF, I got approved for a Citi Thank You card which will earn me 20,000 points after $1,500 in purchases. That's easily done!

On the way home last night, I stopped at Culver's for dinner. $7. I could have powered through and eaten at home, but I knew that as soon as I got home I would have to get to work on taking out the screens. Our building is getting the windows washed today.

My leg continues to hurt, so I was on the internet looking for remedies/diagnoses yesterday. Someone recommended drinking a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. I did, and I didn't take painkillers last night! However, it's hurting again this morning. Frown

I read about many other alleged health benefits of drinking vinegar, so I might keep going just for the heck of it.

There was also a recommendation to stop eating sugar. Well, I don't know if I can cut it out, but I can cut it down.

Weight loss, of course, is a given as far as helping out your knees.

I had a good talk with my son last night. He has applied for a job in fundraising (my field), specifically in planned giving. Planned giving is donating through one's estate. The position he's applying for would handle the marketing, reporting, donor acquisition and data analysis for a big university. He has experience in data analysis, but everything else would be new to him. I hate to encourage him, really. He would be giving up a secure job with the government to be in a field that is well-known for being volatile. But he really wants a change. He has done the same job since college and there is really no upward mobility.

Today the College is having a big staff barbecue on the mall. Free lunch, woo hoo! But first I have to meet with the auditors, so I guess that is my penance!

Missed the Train Again

July 30th, 2014 at 01:34 pm

So it's another day of wasted gas. I woke up with the alarm this morning, but closed my eyes for a minute ... by the time that "minute" was over, it was only one-half hour till the train was scheduled to leave the station. I did my best, but did not make it. So I drove again. Taking a later train is not a good option; it makes me two hours late because of lag time at the downtown station.

I had a long, wakeful period in the middle of the night. For some reason I was re-hashing my life and all the bad choices I made and all the grievances I've had. I don't know why I get into jags like that. Today, in the cold light of day, I am fine with the past and just glad I made the best of things. My screen saver has the saying, "Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well." That's my mantra! I'm determined to play this hand well, no matter what I was dealt.

But it seems it does bother me in the midnight hours.

This probably all stems from having made plans to visit an old professor of mine next month. I wish I had better things to tell him! Suddenly, I am so aware of all my failures -- all the disappointments and setbacks since college days. I thought I had the world by the tail back then!

But I can't deny that I have learned so many life lessons, and I am probably a better person because of my trials than I would have been with an easier life. So I just need to let it go, and take pride in who I've become.

Sorry, very philosophical this morning! More coffee is needed....

Found a Dime

July 29th, 2014 at 01:07 pm

Woo-hoo! Found a dime, which puts me REALLY close to the $40 mark in Found Money! Any day now! And I'm also close to the $1000 mark on Snowflakes, so I have two countdowns in progress!

I spent $2 yesterday on a gift for a co-worker -- a beautiful teacup and saucer at Goodwill. I also bought a top for my granddaughter for $2.

And then I stopped at Home Depot and bought 5 LED bulbs. I got $40 off for the contractor discount (no, I'm not a contractor, but they didn't seem to mind). So they were only $27.

I'll be paying my condo insurance today - $160.

Everything else is on autopilot.

Monday Morning

July 28th, 2014 at 03:15 pm

My kids were out of town, so it was a quiet weekend for me. I'd like to say I got a lot done, but I had a lot of pain in my knee, so I really DIDN'T get a lot done. (It feels better today.)

Most importantly, I got my mammogram out of the way. Just the routine test; hoping to get the "all clear" in the next few days.

I did the grocery shopping -- 11 items this time, for a total of $46. I bought toothpicks, buns, laundry detergent, coffee, toilet paper, eggs, wine, chicken breasts, baby spinach, raspberries, and an eggplant. I had a $10% off coupon and a coupon to get the chicken for $1.49 a lb. Pretty much everything else was on sale -- my overall savings came up as 32%.

I made eggplant parmesan and chicken with eggplant in garlic sauce. I tried not to make too much, but I still had a lot of leftovers, which I will freeze.

I had to take my laptop to the Geek Squad because the screen was blank. Luckily, they got it working again for nothing, just removed the battery and put it back in again. Then they cleaned off temp files, etc. and let it go through its updates. It's still slow, but if I find it too slow I can get the diagnostic testing done. Unfortunately, I let my service agreement slide, so it would cost $70 to do that. But I think I can still remove a lot of files on my own and make a difference.

I did three loads of laundry for $4.50.

I also went to Home Depot to buy some LED lights for my living room sconces. The nice man there advised me to come back during the week in order to get contractor rates. It will save me $5 a bulb! So I'll do that tonight.

I guess I did get quite a bit done after all!

I drove to work this morning, for no other reason than getting up too late to catch the train. I hate to do that -- when I've already paid for the train ticket, I hate to waste the gas! But what's done is done. I heard the alarm; I just couldn't make myself move!

I got my electricity bill. It was $27, quite modest for the summer. Of course, my cranky wiring has made it difficult to run the air conditioners!

Looking at a quiet week, both bosses on vacation, no big projects at hand. Woo-hoo!

Found Three Cents

July 25th, 2014 at 02:01 pm

The total is rising ... I am so close to that $40!

Looks like my suitcase will be delivered today. I am a little nervous; I hope the package thieves have moved on....

After saying that I hardly ever qualify for surveys on MyPoints, I qualified yesterday for a survey that awarded 200 points! It pays to keep trying!

I am close to a $5 Amazon reward on Swagbucks; I will probably get the final points this weekend.

I probably won't do any garage saling this weekend -- my DIL will be out of town, and I have to get a mammogram on Saturday morning.

I prepared and cooked the rest of my fresh green beans last night, but then I got on the phone and forgot the beans were simmering on the stove. The water boiled away and the beans were scorched. Not too terribly, though. I will eat them! The food value is still there.

Weighed in today, and the good news is, I haven't gained.

A penny, and plans

July 24th, 2014 at 01:50 pm

I found another penny, and that may be my only financial news! Everything else is on autopilot, which is a good thing, as Martha would say.

I am planning another trip up to Michigan with my son's family on my birthday weekend in August. We had such a good time at my brother's house, we are going to do it again, this time without the distraction of a wedding! Smile I am toying with the idea of staying an extra day to visit my old college -- I would like to talk to the development staff there and compare notes, and I would like to visit with an old professor. We'll see if I can work it out.

After a few weeks of being pretty lenient with myself I'm back on the diet. Once more dealing with those pesky hunger pangs/cravings -- I just have to remind myself that hunger is a sign that it's working and to welcome the minor discomfort!

I am planning a trip to Europe for some undetermined time in the future. I don't know if I'll ever be able to do it, financially, but I am enjoying the planning anyway. I'm in an "if you build it, they will come" mentality. I've centered on London (with side trips to Canterbury and Oxford), as well as Paris and Amsterdam. Right now I'm making a list of the English sites I want to see and peeking at hotels, eateries, etc. So if there is anything I MUST see in London, Paris or Amsterdam, let me know!

MyPoints

July 23rd, 2014 at 01:26 pm

My Snowflakes are up to $905 now that I added $25 from MyPoints. I got the Amazon gift card credit. I used to wait for $50 rewards from MyPoints, but now it takes so long to get the points. There aren't nearly as many click-through's as there used to be. I am not one to sign up and register for "special offers" since my mailbox is cluttered enough as it is.

I do always try to qualify for surveys, so I can get the 10 points. I'm almost never accepted for the full survey.

Anyway, my Snowflakes are the highest they've ever been! Getting near $1000 is awesome!

I'm also getting near the $40 mark in found money. The other day my DIL teased me for picking up a penny, and I told her, "Hey, I'm almost up to $40 now." That gave her pause.

Other than purchasing the train pass, which I reported yesterday, I spent no more money. On the way home I was really craving caramel/nut corn from Garrett's and even briefly got in line, but then I thought, "What is this helping? My budget, my diet? No, just my cravings." I got out of line.

Last night I turned on the air conditioner in my bedroom. The ceiling fan was on, too, and I had a lamp on. Nothing else in the condo was on. Poof! Everything went black. Maybe it was the ceiling fan that did it. All I know is, I'm about ready to give up on the air conditioner. I used only the ceiling fan last night, as a storm and cooldown was predicted (and came!) I suppose I can turn on the air when EVERYTHING is off, but that's pretty limiting. I like to read in bed.

I'm starting to get a little tired of vintage charm.

Last night I noticed the cat food bowl was getting low, and this morning I left without refilling it. I feel so bad! I know the cats will be all right today, but they'll be hungry. It seems like I just can't get out the door without forgetting something!

No-Spend Day

July 22nd, 2014 at 02:16 pm

Yesterday was a no-spend day. A rarity in a high-spend month!

But this morning I bought my train pass, so that's the end of my "streak." Smile I had to stand in a long line, and I almost missed the train. Kind of foolish, since I have another whole week in which to buy it, but my experience is that the lines just get longer and longer.

Last night I made tuna melts on crescent rolls. Two servings went into the freezer. I'm very well fixed for lunches now. I've been methodically freezing portions of virtually every meal I've made recently. It certainly makes the mornings easier, when I just grab something from the freezer and stick it in my lunch bag.

I went to bed really early last night. I wish I could say I slept the night through, but I had some wakeful times. I did not have the air conditioner on, but used the ceiling fan. It keeps the room comfortable, but it does make my hair tickle my face, which is kind of distracting! I also have a bit of a headache, and I wonder if the fan is responsible for that.

Today is supposed to be the hottest day yet this year, so I guess I'll have the air on tonight!

Happy Monday!

July 21st, 2014 at 02:45 pm

It was a good weekend. On Saturday I went to a huge church rummage sale with my DIL and her mom. I can't even describe what an event this was. Parking was almost impossible -- we had to stand in line to get in -- we had to stand in line to check out. They were very well-organized, but the attendance was enormous.

I bought a sugar bowl & creamer in my Old Britain Castles pattern, as well as two bread & butter plates. I also got four matching Pyrex bowls, two colored bottles, a book, a puzzle, and some reading glasses. I spent $30. The OBC items were not especially cheap, but cheaper than I have seen them on eBay.

After the sale, we all went to a local restaurant for lunch. I spent $16 on a steak sandwich, which served as my lunch AND dinner.

In the afternoon I did two loads of laundry for $3, and on Sunday I grocery-shopped -- only $20. My eleven items were spaghetti sauce, applesauce, crescent rolls, frozen peas, fresh green beans, a Vidalia onion, butter, two boxes of potato flakes, and two prepared meatloaves. The meatloaves were BOGO, plus $1.00 off each, so I thought they were worth it. In addition, I got 10% off overall. I had my fried chicken coupon with me, but I went too early in the day -- the chicken hadn't been made yet. So I substituted the meatloaves. They are in the freezer to use another day. Everything else was on sale, except for the butter and onion.

I had a BIG can of tuna in my pantry, and on Sunday I made tuna salad, tuna patties and the makings for tuna melts (in crescent rolls). I think I'll be eating tuna all week!

Also on Sunday, I got a haircut ($17).

I found .09 over the weekend -- a nickel and four pennies, all in different places.

I met a friend at the pie shop (yeah, it's my place). She treated me, because she was trying to get me interested in selling vitamins for a company called USANA. It seemed like a typical multi-level marketing company to me, and I passed. It was a bit uncomfortable. I don't like the concept of friends selling to friends. But I really like this person, so I heard her out. She brought her mom, however, who was a BIG salesperson -- not pushy, but determined! I had to disappoint them.

Once again, I had an awful night's sleep -- my knee hurts the WORST when I'm lying down for some reason. But I'll sleep tonight, once I get through this day!

This is Why I Go to Goodwill!

July 18th, 2014 at 02:58 pm

Last night I went to Goodwill and scored two wonderful finds! I found a Baccarat frog paperweight for $3. Perfect condition. This little item retailed for $500 when it was produced and is selling on eBay now for $150 or so. I'll enjoy it for a while but it's eventually going on the selling block.

The other find was a perfect yellow Fiesta teapot. Also $3. That will be a Christmas gift for my DIL. It's worth about $50.

I also found some clothes for the grandkids, some wrap, some decorative file boxes, and two scarves for myself. Altogether I spent $20.

I filled up the gas tank ($37) and went to Wal-Mart for household & pet supplies ($50).

I got home pretty late, and I was tempted the whole way to stop for fast food. I didn't. I was too tired to cook at home, but I had cereal, which was fine. Tonight I'll make the broccoli cheese soup I planned for last night.

And I found .02!

Bought a Suitcase

July 17th, 2014 at 02:07 pm

I didn't mention that while I was on my trip, the wheel fell off my rolling duffle bag. It can't be replaced -- the plastic piece that attaches to the bag cracked and broke in half. Not too long ago, the wheel fell off my little Samsonite bag, too. I'm definitely losing my wheels! So yesterday, when I got an email from Groupon that they would chip in $10, I looked for a wheeled bag. I ended up getting a Swiss rolling bag for $77 (after the $10 off). Supposedly the original price is $200. I would never pay that, but $77 is okay. Should be a nice bag! I'm considering it an early birthday present for myself.

I went back to the Amex site and found the $20 Amazon offer. So this morning I ordered a game for my son's birthday, as well as more K-cups and a wooden spoon so I could get free shipping. After the $20 is deducted, I will pay $10 for the lot. I'm kind of excited about the wooden spoon -- it has a squared-off corner so it can be used in straight-sided bowls.

Now I'm going to stop shopping deals for a while!

I drove today so I could pick up x-rays at the hospital, so I will get gas this afternoon. I'm also going to make a stop at the jeweler's -- I brought a diamond necklace whose chain has a knot in it, and the clasp is so small I can't ever get it on and off. I'm going to see if they can replace the chain, or fix it. It's one of those chores I've meant to get done for a while.

I believe I will also stop at Wal-Mart on the way home. My grocery list is getting full of non-food items. It would make more sense to get them at Wal-Mart.

For my weekend grocery shopping, I have a 10% off coupon for my regular grocery store, as well as a coupon for 8 pieces of fried chicken from the deli for $4. I think I will get the chicken. It would make good lunches, something different. I love fried chicken once in a while, but I don't like making it!

Amazon, epiphany, and dolphins!

July 16th, 2014 at 03:04 pm

Yesterday I got an email from Amazon with a code for $10 to use by 7/31. It was a reward for buying a $50 gift card (which I gave to my DIL). I had decided I wasn't going to get the reward, because in fact I didn't pay any cash for the gift card -- I had plenty of credit to redeem. But it came! I got online right away and ordered a pack of 72 K-cups. They were free (using a little more Amazon credit). I figure I'm stuck with using K-cups; I might as well get them free.

I had an epiphany this morning when I realized I could take my laundry downstairs on the way out. I just locked it up in my storage unit. Tonight I'll stop in and start a load before going upstairs. I'm trying to limit my stair-climbing, as my leg is really bothering me again. Too much standing at the zoo didn't help any.

But about the zoo -- I had a starring role! My name was chosen out of a lottery to help out in the dolphin show. All I had to do was give some hand signals to the dolphin who was performing -- no getting in the water required! It was fun, especially to have that personal interaction with the dolphin and to see her face so close up.

SOOOoooo, I can cross that off my bucket list. Perform in dolphin show! Okay, it wasn't on my list, but it was still a neat thing to do.

Tired and Happy

July 15th, 2014 at 02:32 pm

What a wonderful weekend! My niece's wedding went off without a hitch, my brother's new house is fabulous, and we had lots of fun boating, tubing, swimming, playing games, and EATING, EATING, EATING! (Got to be good now!)

The spending wasn't awful. I spent $50 eating out, $87 on gas, and $21 for pictures. I truly meant to get a housewarming gift for my brother, but since my son had my car, I didn't have much opportunity to get out and get something. So I'll have to send something.

This morning I caught up on all my financial stuff, since it is payday. The highlights are: $300 in rewards were logged in from Cap One and Chase. (No longer working on a credit card reward.) I paid my mortgage and the credit cards, as well as my property taxes. My I-Pass payment ($40) was taken out of my Discover account.

After I got home I did laundry ($3) and went grocery shopping ($28). My ten grocery items were paper towels, dryer sheets, K-cups, tuna, bread, margarine, yogurt, cheese slices, almond milk and broccoli.

Today I'm going to the zoo with my office (one of those bonding things). It means a free lunch! My legs are really hurting again from all the weekend activity, so I hope it won't be excruciating walking around the zoo.

The Damage

July 10th, 2014 at 01:20 pm

The car repair came to $1038. I can't believe how much better the ride is, and how unaware I was of how bad it was getting.

I charged it to my Chase Freedom card just at the right time -- it will not appear on this month's statement, but next. That's good because I may be able to pay for it out of my cash flow rather than having to dip into savings.

I did a little pre-packing last night, and some texting with my kids. I decided that sleeping in one of the kids' rooms was not going to work for me -- two rowdy boys in one, a night-owl toddler in the other. I'm sleep-challenged enough already! I tried to get another room, but the hotel is full. (Though I do have an alert in place, if a room opens up.) But my SIL graciously encouraged me to stay at their house. I'll have a couch one night, and a bed after the wedding is over. I think I'll take them a nice bottle of wine!

She also told me to see about getting life-jackets for the kids, since we may be going out on their boat. My guess is that one grandson, at least, will be terrified, but we'll give it a go!

I forgot to mention that I found a penny the other day, and it was a special one! It was a 1903 Indian head penny. It was in pretty good condition, too. I gave it to my grandson for his treasure box. I believe the value is something around a dollar or two, but, who knows, it may grow in value over his lifetime!

The Word on the Car

July 9th, 2014 at 02:57 pm

I got the call from the shop as I was walking to the train yesterday, so I couldn't capture all the details -- but the gist of it is, the cost to repair the brakes and replace the muffler/exhaust system -- and all the little things like lights, hoses, wiper blades, etc. -- was $2,500. I opted to go only for the brakes and the necessary items to keep the car safe. I think that will bring the cost down to around $1,000. While that is daunting, I have done pretty well on repairs over the life of the car. In 2011, it averaged $86 a month; in 2012 it was $183 a month, in 2013 it was $100 a month, and this year ... it's been $0 so far. We're talking about a 12-year-old car. And the above figures include routine maintenance.

I didn't go with the new exhaust system because the car is only worth $5,000 and I only want to keep it for one more year. The mechanic did not think it was unsafe to drive with the exhaust system in the shape it's in. And it's not noisy, at least not to me.

I'm glad I have a nice emergency fund. I remember when a quote like that used to tear up my gut. Now it's, "Oh well, that's what the EF is for!"

I just heard from a colleague who sits on the same board that I do. Her position at work has been eliminated due to reorganization. She has been with this organization for almost 12 years and it's quite a shock. She's single, so no second income to fall back on. I feel so bad for her. I can't even imagine how she must feel. I don't know anything about her financial situation, but I hope she has a cushion.

It seems like no one is safe these days!

Good news!

July 8th, 2014 at 01:44 pm

Yesterday I talked to my SIL and she assured me that there are two rooms reserved in her name at the Hampton Inn and the kids are I are to use them. What's more, they've already been paid for by credit card points. It was all a misunderstanding with my brother that I had to reserve rooms on my own. Apparently, he wasn't in the loop, and she was the one I should have talked to!

So I can wipe that $815 out of my budget. I cancelled my reservation yesterday and am now watching my Chase account to make sure I get credited.

Makes me feel rich!

I bought gas this morning ($48) and breakfast ($3). (I forgot to grab a muffin out of the freezer.) I dropped my car off at the shop. They are going to check the brakes, the muffler, and give me an oil change. It's scary dropping a twelve-year-old car off for service -- I'm likely to lose the $815 I just gained!

After making the car roadworthy, all I have to do is pack.

Yep, it's Monday

July 7th, 2014 at 01:58 pm

Oh, it's hard to go back to work after a long weekend!

Yesterday it turned hot and muggy again. My son came to install the air conditioner in my bedroom. More circuit breaker problems. The bedroom air conditioner is more powerful than the others, so I can't run it at the same time that I run the others. I will have to save it for nighttime only, and turn the others off. Also, get this, I can't run it at the same time that the living room lights are on. I will change the bulbs in the three wall sconces to CF bulbs, which may help.

Now I understand why the previous owner didn't have AC in the bedroom.

Vintage buildings. Ugh.

My chicken in cherry sauce turned out great, and I have two more servings! I have to be mindful to use up everything, as I will be away this weekend.

Now on to getting my car ready for the trip. Only three hours, but I'll be transporting my precious granddaughter!
